Philadelphia Inquirer Op-Ed

The Pulse: Don't judge jury harshly
As in infamous coffee case, justice not always simple.
By Michael Smerconish

Inquirer Columnist

In the aftermath of the Casey Anthony verdict, jury-bashing is back in style - ironically, just as a new documentary is showing how one of the most criticized verdicts in history was misunderstood.
I'm among those displeased with the outcome of the Anthony case. I paid fairly close attention and believed that the Florida mother played a significant role in the death of her daughter. But that doesn't mean I disagree with the verdict.

Now, here's an AP article on NG, featuring an interview, released today, of the founder of Court TV calling NG a "Monster", among other things....here are a few other quotes,

One of the jurors in the Anthony case, Elizabeth Ford, told ABC News that the 51-year-old Grace was not fit for television.

"I think a lot of things she says fuel the fire and they're based on nothing," Ford said. "I'm obviously against making decisions based on just speculation and opinion."
Ilene Farmer, a lawyer in Baltimore's public defender's office, said Grace has undermined respect for the jury system the way she has spoken out against the Anthony verdict. She said she's worried that someone who disagrees with the verdict, whipped up by Grace's disgust, will harm some of the jurors.

ABC's Terry Moran on "Nightline" asked Grace if some of what she does could be perceived as unethical

*FYI...in loosely related news, sort of ...yesterday, upthread a few posts, I posted the story about the Head of AP wanting staff journos to stop tweeting/FB-ing personal views....he mentioned the Casey Anthony case, in particular. I also included a link on "who is' the AP in that post. Today, we see this AP piece on NG.

Many of those who followed the Casey Anthony trial did not get the guilty verdict they wanted, nor did they learn the truth about what happened to the 2-year-old daughter she was accused of murdering.

And for the public, that may be one of the most frustrating parts of the case: Despite all the speculation and theories, they will never know with certainty how or why Caylee Anthony died.

“I think we know as much as we ever will know,” said Beth Hough, a 27-year-old administrative assistant from Chicago who followed the trial. “We don’t know exactly what happened, but if we did, it would help people to finally just move on and to end the story.”

That’s what’s missing: an ending.
