That 'attachment' in question is a continuous loop of leather designed for a belt to thread through. Unless he took off a belt, there's nothing it realistically could have been attached to to come free from. The snap isn't anything to do with attaching it to your person, it's to hold the hilt secure when the knife is sheathed.

Yeh, I'm with you. If he had coveralls (or a black nija outfit), there would probably have not been a belt buckle.
I think he had it in a pocket and it fell out in the struggle, or he left it there on purpose.
