Large Alaska earthquake jolts residents, shakes buildings

“The warning was in effect for Cook Inlet and the Southern Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.

"For other US and Canadian Pacific coasts in North America, the level of tsunami danger is being evaluated," a post on tsunami.gov stated.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake Friday morning was centered about 5 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska's largest city.”

My sister's building was evacuated though I'm not sure what the reason is.

When I got the alert on my phone (I have an app for that) I did a double take. I have one sister in Anchorage, one in Los Angeles and one in San Diego. I was not expecting to be concerned about the Alaska sister from a large earthquake.

“A lawyer who spoke to the Associated Press called it the most "violent" earthquake he's experience in his 20 years in Anchorage.“

Large earthquake rocks Anchorage, Alaska: Officials

“A massive earthquake, -- registering 7.0 magnitude according to the U.S. Geological Survey -- rocked Anchorage, Alaska Friday, sending debris crashing to the ground, damaging buildings and causing "major infrastructure damage," officials said.

The quake happened about 7.5 miles north of the city, the USGS reported, and officials said residents there should brace for aftershocks.“

Looks like their news people are back in the building, but it's a mess. They're going to try to go back on the air ASAP.

One newsperson said Anchorage emergency services issued an alert telling people to shelter in place and don't call 911 unless there's a real emergency.

“It was not immediately clear if there were injuries, but Anchorage police urged residents to be vigilant.

"There is major infrastructure damage across Anchorage. Many homes and buildings are damaged," the department said in a bulletin. "Many roads and bridges are closed. Stay off the roads if you don’t need to drive. Seek a safe shelter. Check on your surroundings and loved ones."“

Tsunami advisories along WA coast canceled after powerful earthquake

“The National Tsunami Center has canceled a tsunami warning that was triggered by a powerful earthquake off the coast of Alaska.

Watches have been canceled for Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, and British Columbia in Canada. Officials in Japan say there is no tsunami threat there.

Mickey Varnadao, a computer specialist with the warning center in Palmer, Alaska, said early Tuesday that an advisory remains in effect for parts of Alaska, from Kodiak Island to Prince William Sound.“

There was a 9.2 in Alaska in 1964. The Pacific Northwest is also at risk of a magnitude 9+

I hope there aren't any fatalities from this quake. Pager on USGS says fatalities should be low. There was an MMI of VIII for approx 4000 people though, which is very strong.

URGENT: The Latest: Tsunami Warning Canceled After Alaska Earthquake

“Officials monitored gauges to see if any underwater landslides would generate tsunami waves.

Because there were none, the warning was canceled.“

——

“Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said she and her family were safe after the temblor in a Twitter post.

“Our family is intact -- house is not... I imagine that’s the case for many, many others,” she wrote. “So thankful to be safe; praying for our state following the earthquake.”“

Alaska earthquake: 7.0 magnitude quake rocks Anchorage

——

“Alaska averages 40,000 earthquakes per year, with more large quakes than the other 49 states combined.

Southern Alaska has a high risk of earthquakes due to tectonic plates sliding past each other under the region. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the Pacific plate is sliding northwestward and plunges beneath the North American plate in southern Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula, and the Aleutian Islands.“

Wow look at the irony of this article, posted yesterday:

New legislation improves earthquake preparedness in Alaska
By Annie Feidt, Alaska’s Energy Desk
November 28, 2018
https://www.ktoo.org/2018/11/28/new-legislation-improves-earthquake-preparedness-in-alaska/

“Congress passed a bill Tuesday to improve how the country prepares for earthquakes.“

Snip

“West said the legislation, which now awaits the president’s signature, will also help Alaska implement the latest technology to monitor earthquakes. He said GPS instruments allow researchers to watch plate tectonics play out in real time. They are being widely used in other west coast states, but Alaska has lagged in installing the new technology. He said the new bill will make it easier for researchers to justify the expense of using GPS instruments in Alaska.“
