Palmer went missing from Talkeetna, Alaska on April 10, 2010. He was last seen in the Talkeetna Mountains, west of Mastodon Road near Bald Mountain. He and several others were riding snowmobiles to their cabin near Sheep Creek. The handlebar on Palmer's snowmobile had snapped off, so he was driving a different one. He was last seen at 7:15 p.m, riding off in the wrong direction where he subsequently became separated from the others. He has never been heard from again.
Palmer was dressed appropriately for the cold weather, but he didn't have survival gear, a GPS device, food, or water. An extensive search conducted in the area turned up no sign of him, although his snowmobile was located in deep snow several miles from the cabin. He had apparently left the main trail and gone off on a side trail where he got stuck in the snow. Despite the soft, deep snow, no footprints were found near the snowmobile, and the helmet Palmer was wearing has never been located. He is presumed to have gotten lost or injured in the wilderness. In April 2011, he was declared legally dead.
Palmer's brother, Michael Palmer, disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1999 and was never found. He was fifteen years old at the time. The two disappearances aren't believed to be related.
