George "Ryan" Johnson, a 34-year-old Juneau man, and Marc-Andre Leclerc of British Columbia were dropped off near the Mendenhall Towers on Juneau's Mendenhall Ice Field on Sunday. The two men last communicated with family and friends Monday after climbing to the top of the towers. They had planned to return to Juneau via the West Mendenhall Glacier Trail by Wednesday evening. Troopers say they found gear that the men were supposed to use to ski out.

Leclerc posted to Instagram from a summit on Monday, “Rare live update here… that is Mt Fairweather in the distance.”

The pair were last in communication with family/friends on 3/5/18 after climbing to the top of the Towers

The dispatch also notes that “there was a significant snow storm in the Juneau area on 3/7/18 and neither individual is reportedly equipped with a SAT phone or emergency beacon.”

Search and rescue located the gear cache to which Leclerc and Johnson had intended to ski out after their ascent.

The search and rescue operation is still ongoing.

Neither man, it seems, was wearing a beacon or carrying a SAT phone. A local climber said that it isn’t uncommon for climbers traveling to the Towers to go without a SAT phone, since there is cell service in much of the area.

The search was suspended Thursday night around 5 p.m. due to mechanical issues and poor weather.

The state troopers say a helicopter with rescuers aboard was able reach the north face of the mountain on Tuesday.

There, they saw ropes matching the description of gear Leclerc and Johnson were carrying and that both are presumed dead.

They say recovery efforts aren’t feasible right now due to avalanche danger and safety hazards and that next of kin for both men have been notified.

Details of Disappearance
Johnson and a fellow mountain climber, Marc-Andre Leclerc, disappeared on March 5, 2018, while climbing the Mendenhall Towers, twelve miles from Juneau, Alaska. They posted on Instagram that day, saying they had completed a new route on the north face of the 6,910-foot Main Tower.

They were due to return from their climb on March 7, but never arrived and were reported as overdue. There was a significant snowstorm in the area by the time, and neither of the climbers had a satellite phone or emergency beacon.

The search began on March 8. Searchers found a cache of ski equipment left by the men below the peak. They also saw an intact anchor rope at the top of an ice shoot in the Fourth Tower, and two climbing ropes in a crevasse midway down the Fourth Tower. They never found Johnson and Leclerc, however, and on March 14 the search was called off.

Leclerc and Johnson are noted for being two of the best climbers in North America, and both have won awards for their mountaineering achievements. Authorities believe their bodies are in the crevasse where the climbing ropes were seen.
