I can't find any photos of Jan. The surname is very rare in AK - I can find one other woman with that surname in AK but no one else in the state (not an exhaustive search obviously but I tried a few different avenues).

This ancestry search result looks like it might be him, so I guess he may not have had a lot of family in the US? I don't have an ancestry account so can't read the details, but am guessing it is a record that he arrived in the US from Poland in 1979. There is a listing right under that one that uses the same dates with the name 'John Mlot'.


If they're not even sure what year he went missing, how do they know he's actually missing? Maybe he just moved on and changed his name or something.

He changed his name from Jan to John when he became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Here's the record:

There is a John Frank Mlot who is currently living in New York state, he's 66 which is the right age but not sure that the missing John Mlot had a middle name?

The one in New York was born the same year but he has a different month and day for his date of birth. I don't know if you can see Familysearch (it's free to sign up for an account). I don't think the one in NY is him because of the different DOB. No mention of a middle name for the Alaska one. The Name change/Naturalization record is the ONLY record I found for the missing Jan/John Mlot.

Jan Mlot – The Charley Project

Added to the Charley Project.
Mlot was last seen in Juneau, Alaska on October 10, 1985. He had been living and working there for about two years. He left his vehicle and all his belongings behind and has never been heard from again. Mlot's out-of-state relatives reported him missing in January 1988. Few details are available in his case.
