ADDINGTON (1972) The 40 ton 54 foot wooden oil screw fishing vessel Addington foundered May 27, 1972 near Cape Uganik in the Shelikof Strait. Skipper Melvin Torson of Kodiak , Leonard Niemi of Anchorage and John Cheplak of Kodiak were lost with the vessel.

I can't find anything additional on him. There is someone graduating from West High School in Anchorage in 1968 but without more info can't be sure it's the same one.

I think I have him graduating from high school in 1967 from South Kitsap High School. It's not a particularly common name...

Melvin was my uncle, there is no mystery here really. It is the case in Alaska that when boats sink sometimes bodies are not recovered.
