GUILTY AK - Michael Liufau & 3 others for near-fatal beating of teen, Anchorage, 2013

Someone better at sleuthing than me might be able to find something newer. I have been trying to find an update with little luck but this article indicates that 3 weeks later James was still unconscious. I thought I had found an article from Oct. 24 saying he was still unconscious but the link didn't work so I don't know if that was true. Sometimes "updates" are just rehashes of the previous info. He must have really sustained a beating. I wonder if he might be in a medically induced coma because he sustained such terrible injuries they had to keep him unconscious. Sad that these stories of young men seem to fade away without resolution. :(

His woman would probably be surprised to hear that. :twocents:
I have seen NOTHING to even indicate that and I've looked A LOT.

Some kind of hazing scenario gone wrong perhaps? I just hope he recovers.

Maybe he is in a medically induced coma due to the severity of his injuries. Hope the person with a conscience sends another letter with more information as to what happened and naming those responsible.

Beaten Anchorage teen no longer in coma

The Anchorage Daily News (http://bit.ly/1cwmOf9) reports 18-year-old James Clinton is recovering from near-fatal injuries......

Butler says Clinton is talking and breathing on his own but suffered brain damage and doesn't remember much of the assault.

An investigation continues.

****

Clinton's family hired attorney Rex Butler to ensure that he would be treated well while he is recovering, Butler said.

Butler said Clinton's sister is the only family member in Anchorage.

Thanks for the update. Someone must be really nervous right now. Any thoughts on why the family hired an attorney to make sure he was treated well? That seems a little odd.

Hire an attorney to make sure he's treated well?? I have never heard of that! :waitasec:

Since the victim is brain damaged now, maybe he needs someone to represent him in the hospital and for legal reasons when he is questioned or appears in court. The sister never had much to say and doesn't seem to want to be involved.

Just got curious as I hadn't heard anything else, and found this oldish article:

http://www.adn.com/2013/11/18/3184207/four-charged-in-anchorage-teens.html

Two men being sought in the beating of James Clinton were arrested overnight, Anchorage Police said. Two others were already in custody.

Tye Manning, 21, turned himself in near police headquarters on Tudor Road on Monday evening, police said in an email.

Trevvor Trobough, 20, was arrested just after 3 a.m. at the Brother Francis Shelter, police said, after staff members recognized him from media coverage and called the police.

Earlier story:

Anchorage police have charged four men in the beating of an 18-year-old that officers found in a downtown house set for demolition in September. Detectives are still looking for two of the alleged assailants.

Still don't know what it was about...

So, here's some more:

http://www.newsminer.com/news/alask...cle_ff3532ea-5244-11e3-a4b8-0019bb30f31a.html

A friend of the group told detectives that Trobough lived at the house and invited others over the night of the assault. A woman told police that Clinton made advances toward Liufau's girlfriend and Trobough punched Clinton.
"She said Trobough hit Clinton first and knocked him out. She said Trobough stomped on Clinton's head several times," wrote Detective Jackie Conn in a court document...

Trobough a month later bragged about beating Clinton, the witness said.

A 21-year-old Anchorage man was sentenced on Monday to 18 months in jail for his part in the brutal beating of a teenager in the basement of a vacant downtown house more than a year ago... All four of the defendants struck plea deals with the state in the past month; Trobough is the second to be sentenced...

According to Liufau’s plea deal, he agreed to a sentence of six years with two years suspended as well as three years of probation. In exchange, the state dropped four additional felony charges. His sentencing is set for Jan. 5.

Manning changed his plea, and sentencing is set for Feb. 13. Fiso pleaded guilty to a charge of hindering prosecution on Oct. 3 and received an 18-month sentence.

One of the four men who beat a teenager so severely he almost died more than a year ago was sentenced Monday to a total of seven years in prison for his role in that Anchorage crime, as well as another Alaska assault case.

Michael Liufau appeared in state Superior Court Monday afternoon to hear Judge Jack Smith’s approval of his plea agreement in the September 2013 beating of James Clinton.

The last of four men charged in the September 2013 beating of 18-year-old James Clinton in an abandoned downtown house slated for demolition was sentenced Friday to a suspended jail term.

Superior Court Judge Michael Wolverton suspended Tye Manning’s sentence for three years and gave the 22-year-old credit for the 338 days he spent locked up while his case was pending. Manning pleaded guilty to one count of hindering prosecution in the case; three assault charges were dropped.
