AK - plane with 10 on board missing near Nome Alaska

Official name of the flight is Bering Air Flight 445.
Maybe the shifting of our earths magnetic poles should be up for consideration???...or not.

ETA:
Bad weather or icing seem like more likely causes.

I feel bad for Sean Duffy, the Secretary of Transportation. He's had a rough start to his tenure.

From the link above: “Bering Air Flight 445, a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, disappeared on Thursday afternoon while it was flying over the Bering Sea on a route from Unalakleet to Nome, a city some 530 miles northwest of Anchorage.

Alaska State Troopers said the missing aircraft was carrying 10 people, including 9 passengers and 1 pilot.”

“The Cessna 208 Caravan, on Bering Air Flight 445, left Unalakleet, Alaska, about 2:40 p.m. local time, said David Olson, the airline’s director of operations. The plane went off the radar and lost radio contact with air traffic control and the airline around 3:20 p.m., roughly 10 minutes before it was scheduled to arrive in Nome, he said.”

According to data from flight tracker FlightRadar 24, the plane, a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, was last seen over the Norton Sound at around 3:16 p.m. AKST.

The plane was about 12 miles offshore when its position was lost, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard aircraft “will not land, but will fly a grid pattern over the water and shoreline in attempts to locate the plane,” the fire department said. “The plane is equipped with specialized equipment for search and rescue that enables them to locate objects and people through no visibility conditions.”

Crews are frantically working to establish the plane's last coordinates, but weather conditions in the area are so poor that it has limited the ability to launch an air search.

A Coast Guard plane equipped with specialized equipment that allows it to 'locate objects and people through no visibility conditions' has arrived in the area to conduct a 'grid pattern search' over the water and shoreline.”

.Visibility at Nome Airport was down to only half a mile on Thursday evening, and authorities said they expected wind gusts of over 35 mph.

The inclement weather meant air searches over the White Mountain were being limited, with crews also searching the waters in the Norton Sound inlet where the plane last registered.

The Coast Guard deployed a HC-130 aircraft to aid the search, which is carrying 'specialized equipment for search and rescue that enables them to locate objects and people through no visibility conditions', officials said

Agree. I think the hit bad icing conditions while they circled, lost lift and went into the water. A person could only survive a few minutes in water that cold.

The FBI is assisting the search with technical resources, including working to geolocate the cell phones of the plane’s passengers, a bureau spokesperson told CNN. FBI field offices have personnel specially trained in analyzing cellular telephone tower data, which can assist authorities in geolocating the last registered location of a device.

This seems odd. I understood the plane was last known over Norton Sound. I wouldn't think that anything the FBI could provide would be any more accurate than the last aircraft signals.
