Alabama mom accused of shooting heroin while giving birth

An Alabama woman who continued to use hard drugs while pregnant admitted to using heroin while in labor just before the infant died, authorities said.

Amanda Malpas, 34, is charged with chemical endangerment of a child resulting in death, which carries the same penalty as murder, Mobile County Sheriff's investigators told Fox 10 Mobile.

Investigators said she hasn't shown remorse throughout their inquiry, the news outlet said. The charge against her could be upgraded to murder once a toxicology report is completed.

Mobile woman admits to causing her newborn’s death from drug use

A west Mobile woman accused of causing her own newborn’s death by continual drug use during her pregnancy pleaded guilty to a felony charge Thursday.

Amanda Malpas was sentenced to 20 years in prison, 17 years suspended. She has to complete a court ordered drug rehab also.
