Birmingham PD searching for missing 71-year-old man

How far is the hospital from his group home and how was he supposed to get there after he was released? Did he have any cash on him and cellphone to call a taxi/Uber? Why no one from the group home picked him up just to be safe since he has dementia? Also, why was he reported missing only today, Feb 2? It's beet 5 days already! This doesn't make much sense.

Thanks for posting this. I hadn’t heard of it yet locally in Birmingham.

This is sadly something that seems to happen often here. It seems the group homes don’t provide rides & the family didn’t pick him up (or report him for several days). It’s not the safest area to walk around either. There are plenty of group homes within walking distance, but I can’t find anything showing where he lives. The current address listed for him is an old out of state address.

I really hope he’s found safe!

I wanted to add that the other cases like this in Birmingham have not had a good ending like this. It’s mostly reported after the fact too. There are so many busy main roadways, interstates, etc. around UAB & there are way too many people who need to go back to driving school.

A similar case in 2018 was a man who was 72 with dementia. He wondered off in the same area & someone hit him as he was walking in the middle of traffic on a road that’s scary to drive on, much less walk. I unfortunately was in an Uber 2 cars behind the one that hit him, so I saw it happen. I was worried this same thing would happen to Mr. Trammell. So glad it did not!
