Officers said the body is decomposed to the point where they cannot identify gender.


"There were clothes, but we have not been able to identify the deceased by the clothing," Billingsley said.

Authorities also are checking on missing-person reports in hopes that will create some leads.


The body was found approximately 15 feet off the roadway between the Huntsville Road and Florence Boulevard intersections on the north side of Helton Drive.

"It is decomposed to the point where we can't determine whether there was foul play," Billingsley said.


He said investigators do not know how long the body had been there. Police will check the transportation department's mowing schedule. That will tell them how long it has been since the last time that stretch was mowed.

Florence Police have identified a body found Thursday as 39-year-old Chrysty Lyn Copeland of Florence.
