Decatur police are seeking the public's help in locating a missing teenager.

Irma Maria Diego-Gomez, 14, was last seen at about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday when she left for school in Decatur, police said. When she did not arrive home in the afternoon, it was discovered that she never arrived at school.

Police said Diego-Gomez is a Guatemalan female, under 5 feet tall, with slim build. She has shoulder-length black hair and brown eyes. Diego-Gomez was last seen wearing a red/black plaid shirt and bluejeans.

Police did not know if she was in the company of anyone. Diego-Gomez does not reside with her family in Alabama. She does have family in Guatemala, police said.

Decatur police said they have now classified the 14-year-old girl who was reported missing Oct. 11 as a runaway.

Police believe Irma Maria Diego-Gomez, 14, decided to leave Decatur and return to the village where she was raised by her grandmother in Guatemala.
