Jones has been held since March 29 in the Jefferson County, Alabama jail on charges of murder and abusing a corpse.

While Jones told police he accidentally killed Luxford after a fight in a hotel, a murder warrant alleges he intentionally caused her death by hitting her in the throat with a golf club, the report stated.

Bessemer Police Lt. Christian Clemons called the case a 'once-in-a-career type situation' and said that if Jones had not come forward, the case likely would have never been solved.

Brian Edward Jones, now 62, has been charged with murder and abuse of a corpse after he confessed that he killed Janet Jones Luxford in 2001.

The daughter of a woman whose remains were found in a suitcase earlier this year in Bessemer faced her mother’s accused killer in court, seeing him for the first time since her mother disappeared 21 years ago.

Brian Edward Jones, now 62, has been charged with murder and abuse of a corpse after he surprised Bessemer police by showing up out of the blue in late March and confessing that he had killed 41-year-old Janet Jones Luxford in 2001 at a Bessemer hotel.

Jones appeared before Jefferson County Circuit Judge David Carpenter in the Bessemer Cutoff Monday morning for a preliminary hearing.

This is definitely a sad story. It must have been a very out of the way location she was left at since no one found her remains in the intervening years, and she hadn't been buried, even in a shallow grave.
