FORT MORGAN, Ala. (WBAY) - Searchers are looking for a Reedsville, Wisconsin teenager who went missing while swimming in Alabama.

A news station in Mobile reports that family members have identified the missing teen as Jevon Lemke.
The report states Lemke was swimming near Fort Morgan when he was pulled under by a rip current Sunday afternoon.

The U.S. Coast Guard and law enforcement have been searching the water for Lemke. The search was halted Sunday night when darkness set in. It resumed Monday morning.

The search for a missing teen who went under while swimming near Fort Morgan on Sunday resumed Monday morning, but was suspended in the afternoon due to rough conditions on the water.

Search teams said huge waves and powerful wind made it too dangerous for them to continue searching for 17-year-old Jevon Lemke. The search will resume when conditions improve.

Parents say teen tried to help family caught in rip current before being swept away

FT. MORGAN, Ala. (WPMI) — The parents of Jevon Lemke, a Wisconsin teen missing off the coast of Fort Morgan since Sunday, said their son was swept away while trying to save them from a rip current.

The Lemke family said they’re not giving up hope the Jevon, 17, can be found and are pleading for those living along the Gulf Coast to help if they can.

Jevon Lemke's heartbroken family says the fact that he was swept away while trying to help them is a reminder that he was a very selfless person.

"We got caught first and he tried to help and got caught too,” said Carrie Lemke.

“It just felt like a long time and it was just, I don't know, minutes? I feel bad. It should have been me," Chris Lemke said.

The Coast Guard, Fort Morgan Volunteer Fire firefighters and other emergency responders searched the waters for more than 24 hours until it was suspended due to dangerous surf conditions.

Search crews also combed miles of coastline with no luck.

Still, Fort Morgan Volunteer firefighters continue to scour the beach, dawn to daybreak, hoping just for a glimpse of Jevon.

The Lemke's say they don't want to be a burden but are asking anyone on the beaches, the water or in the air on the Gulf Coast to keep Jevon in mind.

"Just keep watching. If you're a fisherman or anything, just keep watching for him. I know he's probably not alive but I want to take him home,” said Chris Lemke.

Officials said if conditions improve, divers from the Bon Secour Fire Department will come to help in the search efforts on Thursday.

This is the saddest thing I've read in a long time.......

The ocean is so strong.... and not all beaches are posted with riptide warnings when there is one. I've seen so many vacationers in the water who are totally unaware of it. The waves look fun but are so dangerous. I feel so bad for his family, and hope he is found soon.

His father, Chris Lemke, told People he and his wife, Carrie, were swimming in the ocean when the riptide began to overwhelm them. Their teen son was one of several people who jumped in to help, but he was swept away.

“He was pulled out further … we went back in to try to get Jevon, but he was too far out. I tried yelling for Jevon,” Chris Lemke said. “We went and got help, we waited for the ambulance. There wasn’t much we could do. We were kind of helpless waiting for everyone to get there to try to search for him and get him out of the water.”
"Selfless. He was selfless. He didn't think about himself first - it was others. Always," family members told WALA.
Fog and rough surf have been hindering search efforts. The Lemke family has been desperately watching and waiting as volunteers and the U.S. Coast Guard search for the teen, who is presumed dead.

"We plan to stay until there's no hope in finding Jevon. I hope that happens. I don't want to be greedy, I don't want to take away from people, but I just want to find my son. That's all," Chris Lemke said.
