A Mobile man who disappeared on Nov. 15. 1988 has never contacted family members left behind with debts and a failed business.
John L. "Johnny" Maples' gun and ignition keys were found in his pickup truck at the office of his hauling company, which burned about seven hours after his disappearance. "We have no indication that there was any foul said Lt Dyal Walley. "The fire marshal never could find the origin of the fire. It was out in a rural area and the fire was going good when they got there." Maples' uninsured company was $470,440 in debt, according to records in federal bankruptcy court. The national TV program "America's Most Wanted" contacted police about doing a story on Maples, but chose not to pursue it. Maples' wife, Tanya, appealed for the return of her husband of four years and the father of their young daughter. She filed for divorce in June 1989. She lost the business to debtors, sold their house, and moved in with her parents for a while. Police said she still calls to check on the case and has told them she had plans to marry. "The man was under a lot of financial stress from the business," said Sgt. Palmer Williams, "He could have decided the pressures were too much." "We had him profiled with the FBI and talked to everybody even remotely involved with Maples," Williams said. "It produced nothing. Nobody saw him take a plane out. It's hard to believe that he's still in the U.S." If Maples is stopped for speeding in another state, police run a check and he shows up as a missing person, he's under no obligation to come back, police said.
