On Wednesday, Brunson said, sheriff’s officials used a helicopter and tracking dogs to search the area where the car was discovered.

“I thought it was important that we get out there and search where they found the car just in case,’’ Brunson said. “I want to help as much as possible to give closure or find out what happened to this man for his family.”

“Hopefully, he can be found alive,’’ the sheriff said, “but we don’t have any idea what happened.”

The last time the family of Michael Thompson saw him was Sunday, April 21. Almost two months later family members are still holding out hope the 61-year-old man is alive but also understand the chances.

Thompson was last seen leaving a family function in Eclectic. The family filed a missing person’s report with the Tallassee Police Department two days later. Thompson’s vehicle was found the next day in Macon County.

Buce said there is still some evidence in the case being examined by forensics and might provide some information.

Family and friends of Thompson gathered at the gazebo in Tallassee for a candlelight vigil last Tuesday night. It was an effort to keep Thompson’s name out there but also to help the family deal with the emotions.
