Luther B. Watkins in a 2017 Tuscaloosa County Jail mugshot.

A 20-year-old with prior arrests in at least two robberies and a shooting has been charged with capital murder in the killing of veteran Tuscaloosa police Investigator Dornell Cousette.

Luther Bernard Watkins Jr., who police say was wounded in the Monday-night shootout with Cousette at a west Tuscaloosa home, was served with the warrant Tuesday at UAB Hospital. The charge carries no bond.

"This is a time of deep mourning for all law enforcement,'' said Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Ron Abernathy. “This is a very sad and alarming situation because this is something we do every single day.”

"It’s just a sad situation,'' the sheriff said. “This is my greatest fear - that moment you may have to deal with this.”

Tuscaloosa Interim Police Chief Mitt Tubbs said Cousette – who spent most of his law enforcement career investigating juvenile crimes - received a tip that the suspect wanted on outstanding warrants for failure to appear on felony crimes was on the front porch of a home near Short 17th Street and 33rd Avenue.

We have lost almost twice as many of our police officers this year alone who have been murdered in the line of duty as we have lost our soldiers fighting abroad in wars.

It shows all too painfully the war against our own police officers are right here within our own dangerous borders.

May this fallen hero rest in peace along with all of his sisters and brothers in blue, who have fallen before him. :(

It truly rips my heart out when another fallen hero has ended his duty for his community, and was willing to laydown his own life for them in order to keep them safe, and has now done so. Not just someone who talked the talk, but walked it every single day.

What is even more heart shattering for me to comprehend is how little seem to care, and the threads grow silent as the grave he will be in when hes laid to rest.

Hardly any attention at all of their deaths , and very little posting if any.

Quickly following to the third or forth page because no one cares.. :(

Well I care for every single police officer who gave it their all for others. I will always care, and will never forget the ultimate sacrifices they were so willing to make to make sure their beloved citizens were safe .

Rest in gentle peace my brother. Your watch is over here.

Tuscaloosa’s regular city council meeting on Tuesday opened with something out of the ordinary: a moment of silence for a fallen officer.

“We’ve got to call this what it is: a murder,” said Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox. “We have a murder of a police officer and now as a community, how do we respond? My experience in Tuscaloosa tells me that we’re going to respond in a way that’s going to be a difference-maker for many.”

Investigator Dornell Cousette was killed in a shooting on Monday. He was a 13-year veteran of the department, leaving behind two daughters and a fiancé.

“I woke up with the heavy heart,” said Councilwoman Sonya McKinstry. “But then I woke up mad as hell because I feel that, how many times do we have to continue to have this happen? Who is going to be next?”

“We’ve all got work to do,” he said, “and now, we have a moral obligation to Officer Cousette to do something with this tragedy.”

“I would expect that after this period of mourning, what we will want to do is something that honors his life for generations to come,” said Maddox.

McKinstry echoed, “I am definitely for that. If we could do it tomorrow, I would 100% for that, but I just ask for now, the city is mourning. We’re a big family. We just need to wrap our arms around this family and also, our fellow law enforcement, and just try to pick up the pieces.”

You are 100% correct in everything you've posted. Having worked with Law Enforcement in the past, I've personally seen how they are treated in the public and media. It doesn't matter if you are an officer or a secretary/records clerk/evidence tech......we are all guilty just because we work/worked under the name of POLICE DEPT. They are guilty of wrongdoing before they are given a chance to tell the TRUTH of what happened. And too many have lost their lives because so few seem to care for their safety anymore.

It breaks my heart to see another officer fall. They give their all for the job they do and it's not done for money. It's a job they do because they love to help others and to protect. Sure there are some bad ones.........but the good outweigh the bad all day every day.

GOD BLESS OUR OFFICERS AND THEIR FAMILIES!

I would like to say that the family of Investigator Cousette is foremost in our thoughts, and the investigators of the violent crimes unit working this case have but one goal in mind: obtaining all facts and evidence to provide to the district attorney's office for a successful prosecution," Lt. Jack Kennedy of the sheriff's violent crimes unit said following the shooting.

Cousette had been with the Tuscaloosa Police Department for more than 13 years, Mayor Walt Maddox said during a news conference, according to CNN affiliate WVTM.
"In our community, our heroes wear the police uniform of the Tuscaloosa Police Department. And tonight, one of our heroes has died in the line of duty, protecting our city," Maddox said Monday.
