I have wondered about the dogs, too. I think that, if the dogs weren’t accustomed to being kenneled in the bathroom (or anywhere) and they had been locked up for a few hours, that might be enough to upset them.

Regarding “defending” the property, that could mean anything from dogs viciously snapping and barking at anyone who shows up, or just simply barking. Lots of dogs will kinda put on a “macho” front to strangers and then back down immediately when yelled at or talked to.

I don’t think the dogs would behave in this way towards someone they were accustomed to seeing, like a neighbor or frequent visitor. Some dogs can even recognize cars. But dogs can still be “in the way” or distracting even if they aren’t intentionally acting up. Something tells me it was not Ruth that put them in that bathroom.
