An investigation is underway after human remains were found in western Jefferson County on Thursday.

The discovery was made about 4:12 p.m. Sheriff’s Capt. David Agee said they received a 911 call from some citizens who found the remains while they were out walking were out walking on Shady Grove Road near the Village Creek bridge.

Deputies reported to their location and observed what appeared to be human remains protruding from the ground. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office was notified and came to the scene.

At this time the race or gender of the remains cannot be determined. Deputies will secure the scene until the remains can be excavated on Friday.

Human remains found last week in west Jefferson County have been identified. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the man as Shawn David Jackson of Clay County, Georgia.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said Jackson had been reported missing since July 7.

This case is being worked by Jefferson County investigators and investigators from Clay County Georgia.

The ex-husband of a Clayton County woman who is charged with murder is sharing his story.

Newoker Hurt is in jail accused of shooting and killing her boyfriend, Shawn Jackson. But her ex-husband said she served time for shooting him 20 years ago. He spoke with Channel 2′s Candace

Charlie Newhart said there were good times in his marriage to Newoker Hurt. But they also struggled.

“She had a son by somebody else while we were married,” said Newhart.

But their relationship reached a boiling point 20 years ago this month. When Newhart said an argument with Hurt almost turned deadly.

“She pointed the gun at me and shot me in the forearm and the bullet went through my arm and it grazed my son’s forehead,” recalled Newhart. “I look at her and she’s got the gun pointed at my face and I was like ‘oh God I’m getting ready to leave’. She squeezed the trigger, and nothing came out the gun.”

Court records in Wayne County Michigan show the charges Hurt faced in 2003 including assault with the intent to murder. Newhart said Hurt spent three years behind bars.
