UK - Anita Rose, 57, walking her dog, police investigating suspected murder, Brantham, Suffolk, 24th July 2024'

Anita Rose

An on-the-run man who was living off-grid to avoid being recalled to prison killed a grandmother who was out walking her dog in a "vicious and brutal attack", a court has heard.

Anita Rose, 57, was subjected to "numerous kicks, stamps and blows being delivered to her face, head and body", prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC told a trial. Roy Barclay, 56, of no fixed address, denies her murder.

Mr Barclay's walking boots were the suspected murder weapon, the jury heard.

The prosecution stated that the pattern on the sole of the defendant's boots were compared with the marks left on Ms Rose's face.

[...]

The prosecution described him as "cunning and resourceful" and said he carried dog biscuits with him.

Thoughts are with her family having to hear all these details.

The prosecutor said Mr Rose - who lived with her partner Richard Jones in the village – wore a distinctive pink jacket on the day she was attacked and it was later found at one of Barclay's makeshift camps.

The defendant kept the garment 'as a trophy' and it had his 'semen on the neckline'.

Mr Paxton added Barclay's walking boots, which 'amounted to the murder weapon', were found at the same camp.

'I say the boots are the murder weapon because the pathologist, and additionally the neuropathologist, will tell you the injuries Anita Rose sustained are consistent with kicking and stamping,' the barrister said.

'The level of trauma to Anita's brain is akin to that seen following road traffic accidents, such was the force of Roy Barclay's attack.'

Ms Rose's phone case was also found at the camp and her Samsung earbuds were located at a different hideaway Barclay used under the Orwell Bridge near Ipswich, it is claimed.

A lock-picking kit was also discovered there, along with pairs of women's underwear – although none of them belonged to Ms Rose, Mr Paxton said.

So disturbing and horrific!

Paraphrasing—
The accused, RB slept in makeshift camps. Found at one of his makeshift camps: the pink jacket (with RB’s semen on the neckline ), along with the phone case. Anita’s Samsung earbuds were found at another makeshift camp RB used. Prosecutors are saying he kept these things as trophies.

Quoting—
“Paramedics found Bruce the dog’s lead wrapped tightly round Anita’s leg,” he said.

He said Barclay tied the dog lead around Ms Rose’s leg “we say to stop Bruce (the dog) running off”.

ADMIN NOTE:

Remember, this case is in the UK and therefore it is sub judice.

Sub judice is in effect from the time of arrest and throughout the entire judicial process:

Members can not state something regarding the guilt or innocence of the accused. IOW, we can not state an allegation as fact, i.e. we can't say "He did this or that". We can say "It is alleged the accused did this ..."

Sub Judice 101:

Do not post anything that violates the following principles:

Basically anything that may prejudice the accused’s right to a fair trial

Any statement, suggestion, opinion, or direct accusation that the accused is guilty OR innocent
(i.e. the accused cannot be called "the killer". Instead use "the accused", "the alleged killer", or "the defendant")

A defendant’s previous history of any offences is off limits

Scandalizing the court (disparaging judges, lawyers, any officer of the Court) is off limits

Broadcasting anything about proceedings which happen in the jury's absence is off limits

Any non compliance with an Order of the court is off limits

In the event of an Appeal subsequent to verdict:

Appeals are usually heard by senior judges who are not likely to be influenced by the media, therefore responsible comment is usually considered acceptable once a trial has concluded, regardless of if there is going to be an appeal.

Why would he care if the dog ran off? Seems more likely the leash got tangled around her leg as the dog ran in frantic circles around its owner while she was being beaten to death. 😡

This guy seems very cunning.
On the run from Police for 2 years!!!

But, thank Goodness,
the iphone was his alleged downfall.

<modsnip - sub judice>

The Daily Mail article makes it sound like he cared more about the dog than he did for Anita’s life:
“The barrister claimed the defendant, who 'carries dog biscuits with him and is a dog lover', tied the dog lead around Ms Rose's leg 'to stop Bruce running off'.”

Maybe investigators could see it was not just a tangle but tied tightly in a knot or knots. Unexpected act by the perpetrator to do this, if he did. jmo

Perhaps the defendant tied the dog lead around Ms Rose’s leg to prevent Bruce from following himself.

"Prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC told jurors at Ipswich Crown Court
that news coverage about the killing of grandmother Anita Rose
(and the info about her phone)
prompted Roy Barclay to get rid of the phone.

Jurors were told Mr Barclay walked to a seating area off Upper Orwell Street in Ipswich
and left a carrier bag containing Ms Rose's phone.

The court was told
a couple then picked up the phone minutes later and turned it on,
which in turn alerted Suffolk Police.

Anita Rose was found on this track near the railway line between London and Norwich and Brantham sewage works."

Do we know yet what he was on the run from police for 2 years for?
According to the Mail story above:

'He lived off-grid because, for two years, Roy Barclay had been unlawfully at large.
'He had been on the run trying to avoid the police and authorities to try and avoid being recalled back to prison.'

That is all that can be said at this point.
