We have a smart, educated killer with resources. If he was doing drugs, they are clearing out of his system now. At any rate, facing the death penalty or life in prison is said to focus the mind quickly.

And we have a young, well trained and very ambitious high profile attorney.

I am not taking anything for granted in this case.
Education doesn't make people smart IMO. It makes them educated. I've known a LOT of very educated people without a lick of common sense. So to me, education and being smart aren't always the same thing. JMO!

Generally when someone goes totally off the rails in a brutal criminal way like MM, we are looking at more than one factor in play.

Just speculating here, but perhaps we are looking at early childhood issues. Then personality disorder with aggressive behavior. And as time goes by, a failed marriage, then numerous career setbacks causing limits on his earning potential and employment opportunities. He notices his peer group doing well career wise and financially, with spouse and children.

Then add possible drug abuse and we can see it all heading in a very bad direction. Sometimes people in this situation need a punching bag, an outlet. And they pick the most obvious target for real and imagined grievance
We have to be looking at more than one factor, b/c each one of the factors I think of don’t seem like a big enough deal on their own.
What makes it even harder to understand is he managed to become a DR. You dont really see any obvious indicators that he was a bad guy, (other than Monique feeling like she had to sneak out when she left him.)

To quote my grandmother who was the smartest person I've ever known with an eighth grade education.

"I've known an awful lot of educated fools".

JMO

But we can see red flags from the limited amount of information we have:

-The family who raised him is estranged from him.
-His ex wife was said to be miserable with him because he was abusive.
-Her family is said to have known right away he was the one who committed the murder.
-He is struggling to pass his board certification oral and written exams.
-Looks like he is job hopping.
-Facing law suits for malpractice.
-Not in a stable relationship.

This is the stuff we know about. It is certain there is more.

This is obviously a bright, focused, educated person who got through medical school and training programs. But even this kind of person can have psychological problems, drug problems, etc.

And sometimes everyone around a money making professional covers up for the guy. Everything is kept quiet.

Surgeons have an IQ of 120-140, so the average is 130. This is two standard deviations above the mean of 100.

This places them in the upper 2% of the population. So yes this guy is smart before he even went to medical school. His education did not add IQ points.

Intelligence is multifaceted. Yes someone can be book smart, but have no common sense. Others can be barely literate but are cunning and street smart.

Smart people can be mentally ill, have substance abuse problems, and become violent.

Michael McKee appears by video in his first court hearing in Columbus, Ohio. He’s accused of killing his ex-wife and her husband, Monique and Spencer Tepe. He pled not guilty. Hearing lasted a minute and he did not speak.

Michael McKee was just in court - he plead not guilty to murdering Monique and Spencer Tepe. He did not request a bond, though his attorney made clear they may in the future. McKee is now in Ohio - extradited from Illinois.

She also defended Dr Husel in the Mount Carmel fentanyl deaths.

Hmm, no bond request. I wonder if a possible plea deal is in the works?
