A talented artist with a cheeky smile, the almost 20-year-old walked out of his North Hobart unit on October 9, 2016, visited a shopping centre across the river, and was never seen again.

‘The unknowing is the worst. Time doesn’t exist’

In 2014, Mr Woldemichael suffered serious head injuries in a car accident. She believes it changed him and may still be affecting him.

Later, he moved out of home into Trinity Hill youth supported accommodation, on the other side of the Derwent River which snakes through Hobart, cutting it in half. She still spoke with him regularly, sometimes twice a day.

On September 22, 2016, she invited him to have dinner with her and her partner. He initially agreed but later told her he couldn’t make it. She never heard from him again.

Note to mods: accidental transposing of numbers in title, Naz has been missing since October 9, 2016 (not October 6, 2019).

Here is a Facebook profile created for Naz by a missing persons advocacy network, featuring quite a few good pics of him:

The original Police missing persons alert from 2016:
Missing person update – Nazrawi Woldemichael

Evidence that Naz was likely planning his disappearance (emptying out his flat), reference to his prior mental health issues, but a belief by Police in 2016 that he was alive and still in the State of Tasmania somewhere:

A 9News deep dive including an interview with his mother from 2018, highlighting Naz’s background, upbringing, issues and outlook:
‘The unknowing is the worst. Time doesn’t exist’

A great radio interview from 2018 featuring his brother and a (similarly affected) Australian missing persons campaigner, to accompany the unveiling of a poster for Naz:

Australian Federal Police campaign 2019:
Individuals not statistics - Australian Federal Police shift focus from statistics for National Missing Persons Week 2019

Naz’s missing persons flyer is attached as a JPG.

In summary:
  • Nazrawi Samson Woldemichael, aged 19 at the time.
  • Last seen October 9, 2016 11:10am at Eastlands shopping centre Rosny, just across the river from his Trinity Hill home unit which he left at around 7:50am.
  • Mother last spoke to him on September 22, 2016.
  • Came to Australia as a child refugee from Kenya, along with other family members.
  • Head injury from 2014 car accident had affected him according to his mum.
  • Lived in supported youth accommodation (Trinity Hill) in North Hobart, studied art.
  • Evidence of a planned disappearance (emptying out his accommodation unit, withdrawing cash in days prior).
  • Family has undertaken a range of interviews and activities to publicize his missing person status, as well as checking in with mental health services on the mainland in case he turns up there.
  • Police believed him to be alive and still somewhere on the island State after he went missing. Police say their investigations have been very comprehensive but they need fresh leads.
The Tasmanian Police missing persons coordinator told 9News in 2018:

Somebody knows something that would advance the investigation, and whether over the passage of time their view on maintaining their silence changes that would certainly help.

“If someone who remained silent over the last two years decided they wanted to help us we would really like to help out the Woldemichael family and get some answers for them.

“If they want to speak with us anonymously that could be done as well.”

How sad that Naz is still missing. You’ve got to hope that it’s just a matter of time. He strikes me as a vibrant and talented young artist who had already overcome considerable setbacks. Tasmania is a relatively small island, and there’s been no sightings of him there or on the Australian mainland, nor any closure for his family - big credit to them for their persistence in publicizing his disappearance. Hope is a greater warrior than despair!
