The 23-year-old hiker, Hadi Nazari, was descending a challenging trail in the Kosciuszko National Park about 2.30pm on Boxing Day when he was last seen by friends, who raised the alarm when he did not arrive at the campground where they arranged to meet.

Nazari was last seen on the Hannels Spur Track between Khancoban and Thredbo in the national park.

It is regarded as one of Australia's most challenging bushwalking trails, with an 1800m change in elevation.

Melbourne bushwalker Hadi Nazari and a group of friends travelled to the park on December 22 for a hike and were meant to return five days later.

However, Mr Nazari became separated from the group when he went to take photographs at Hannels Spur Trail near Geehi.

He was last seen at 2:30pm on Boxing Day.

Since then police and other emergency services have been searching the area, with almost 50 specialist search operators from across the state being deployed on Saturday.

Mr Jafari said the fact that so many friends had travelled to help the search was a testament to Mr Nazari's character.

"People are driving from Adelaide, from Sydney, from Melbourne; he's created a great group of friends and we're all trying to find him," he said

Six specially trained volunteers were to camp to further extend the search, which resumes on Sunday.

Experienced bushwalking guide Doug Chatten said the area was unforgiving, particularly for anyone who ventured off track.

"If you're off the track, it's bloody tough country," Mr Chatten told AAP.
"It's no easy walk, that's for sure ... you'd be a hard person to find."

The Hannels Spur trail, with its 1800m elevation change, is one of Australia's most difficult bushwalking routes.

From the article @TootsieFootsie linked above:

"“We’re very hopeful (he’s still alive) and we’ll continue the search until we’re very comfortable that we’ve done everything that we possibly can,” Superintendent Andrew Spliet told reporters at Geehi on Tuesday.

“He’s got access to water, that’s the reason we’re still out here.”"

That sounds very promising! He had the wherewithal to be able to light a campfire. Praying he is found ASAP.

I wonder why he left the lighter behind with the camera though. That’s worrying. Apparently there was a video message on his camera asking for help so I guess leaving the camera was intentional.

A young hiker who has been missing in NSW's Kosciuszko National Park for nearly two weeks has been found alive, his family has revealed.

Hadi Nazari, 23, separated from friends to take photos along the Hannels Spur Trail between Khancoban and Thredbo, in Mount Kosciuszko National Park in the NSW Snowy Mountains, around 2.30pm on Boxing Day.

The hiker rang his family on Wednesday to tell them he was alive and well.

It's understood Mr Nazari, a neurosurgeon student, was found by hikers around 20km from the main police command post in Geehi.

He found a hut that had two muesli bars and that's all he's had to eat for the last two weeks.

and apparently had access to water
is it true that lost hikers should shelter in place?
it seems like most of them keep moving

we have a verified hiking specilist here I just can't remember their name to tag

I wonder if it’s a hut that’s specifically supplied with stocks (albeit as slim as 2 muesli bars may be) for a situation such as a lost hiker, with the assumption they may only wander off the path and be found in a day or two. Otherwise, how lucky that someone left two muesli bars there! As little nutrition as it may have been, all the better he had those two bars opposed to absolutely nothing at all for 13 days.
