"The family of a Melbourne woman missing for four days has made an emotional plea for her to contact them or come home.

Kayla Steffen, 24, was last seen by her housemates at their Altona North home early on Friday morning and police are concerned for her welfare because she has a medical condition.

The woman's sister Phoebe Steffen says her sibling, an amateur artist, seemed 'a bit distressed' before disappearing but it was 'nothing out of the ordinary'.

'She's my best friend, she's the closest person to me and I don't know what I'll do if I don't see her,' she said in tears on Tuesday.

The family of Kayla Steffen is desperate for news of her whereabouts, as police and SES crews search wetlands near the 24-year-old’s house for clues into her movements.

She said her older sister was a nature lover, which prompted the family to believe she may have sought time out in a park or reserve.

Kayla was last seen by her two housemates after returning to her Lark St home about 2.20am on Saturday after a night out with friends.

The housemates believe they may have heard her leave the property about 4am.

They initially thought she may have gone outside to smoke a cigarette, but when they woke later she was not in the home.

Kayla did not take her phone, purse or other belongings.

Detective Senior-Constable Mitch Montgomery said police did not believe the disappearance was suspicious.

“We’ve turned over every rock ... we’re doing everything we can,” Sen-Constable Montgomery said.

Kayla is described as 165cm tall with a medium build and long-brown hair with purple streaks.
