Mother silent on missing toddler
By Marnie O'Neill
November 14, 2004

FRUSTRATED New South Wales police have reached a dead end in a 10-month search for a baby girl who has "dropped off the face of the earth".

The last independent sighting of Leonie Astra Hutchinson was in Scone in December, 2001 when she was 18 months old.

But police did not become aware she was missing until January this year, when they were investigating an unrelated matter.

Leonie's mother, Kate Hutchinson, who has four other children, has been unable or unwilling to say where her daughter is or what happened to her, detectives say.

"As soon as we realised this child was missing, alarm bells went off," Hunter Valley crime manager Detective Inspector Tim Seymour said.

How awful! No one simply vanishes!!! What kind of condition is keeping the mother from talking about where her baby is???

Prayers for Leonie!!!!

Any news on this???

I think the rest of the children need to be taken away from this mother until she tells what she knows. If Leonie simply "turned up missing" while in her care, what's to say the same thing won't happen to the others.

Stop my daughter having babies
By Marnie O'Neill
From: The Sunday Telegraph

SHE'S had six, possibly seven children, all to different fathers. Four were sent to live with their grandmother and at least one, police believe, has been murdered.

Kate Elizabeth Hutchinson, 36, gave birth to her latest child in a Lismore psychiatric ward 10 days ago. The baby boy has since been removed from her care.

Now, her estranged mother is begging authorities to stop her getting pregnant again.

. . .

It was during one of these psychotic episodes that Leonie Astra Hutchinson disappeared, police believe.

The last independent sighting of the toddler was in Scone in December, 2001, when she was 18 months old.

Incredibly, police had no idea she was missing until January, 2004 when they were investigating another "unrelated matter''.

This was because authorities were under the impression that Leonie was in the safe custody of Mrs Hutchinson.

She remembers: ``They rang me up one day and said, `You've got Leonie, haven't you?' and I said, `No, I haven't' and they said, `Oh ...'.''

Hunter Valley detective Inspector Tim Seymour has been searching for the little girl ever since.

"Kate has told us several versions of the same story, which is that she gave Leonie to a wealthy family,'' he said.

"Tragically, we have found absolutely no evidence that suggests this is true, and no evidence the girl is still alive.

"What we need now is for Kate to tell us where her body is, but she is unwilling to do that.''

According to Mrs Hutchinson, Kate developed an obsession with the occult, which prompted her to join a group involved in satanic worship.

As unbelievable as it sounds, one of the police lines of inquiry is the possibility that Leonie was killed as part of some dark, satanic ritual.

If Leonie Hutchinson were alive she would be close to 15 years old. Had Tegan Lane grown up, she would most likely have finished school this year.

Kate Hutchinson, currently living in a tent on the NSW mid-north coast, far away from the courtroom where Leonie's life has been examined at length this week, told police and associates her daughter is living with another family.

THE mother of a toddler missing for over a decade said she had "killed her baby", according to fresh claims heard at a Sydney inquest.

The body of Leonie Hutchinson may also have been hidden in a well near Scone where she was last seen in 2001, Glebe Coroners Court was told.

The inquest into the disappearance of the 18-month-old resumed on Monday with counsel assisting the coroner, Warwick Hunt, saying many more witnesses had "belatedly" come forward.

Detective Inspector Elizabeth Simos told the inquest police had spoken to an associate of Ms Hutchinson. He said Ms Hutchinson had told him she had killed her daughter.

Another associate told police he saw "Rainbow", as Ms Hutchinson was also known, punching her stomach during pregnancy. Counsel assisting the inquiry, Warwick Hunt said the police investigation had recently been assisted by a "new attitude of co-operation" in the Scone and Musswellbrook area about the case.

The court also heard Ms Hutchinson had a bad experience on the drug acid and for years talked about a 'bad wolf-man'.

Friends told the inquest Ms Hutchinson constantly talked about making a sacrifice and 'the chosen one'.

A 43-year-old woman has been arrested by detectives investigating the disappearance of Hunter Valley baby Leonie Astra Hutchinson in 2001.
The woman is expected to be charged with murder on Wednesday after being arrested at a home in Evans Head this morning.
Police believe little Leonie was just 16 months old when she disappeared from her home in Scone in January 2001, but wasn't reported missing until years later in 2004.
The woman arrested on Wednesday morning is being taken to Lismore Police Station where she is expected to be charged with murder.
