A man who told people he was "adopting" a child days before kidnapping a toddler with whom he had formed an "obsession" will be released after serving less than a year in jail.
In the District Court in Brisbane on Thursday, Olando Aleki, 31, pleaded guilty to one count each of child stealing and entering a dwelling with intent.
Last February, Aleki disguised himself in a surgical mask and wore leather gloves to break into a Darra home in Brisbane's south-west, where he snatched the 20-month-old from his cot in the early hours of the morning.
.......
The court heard Aleki suffered an adjustment disorder and was subject to "repeated attachment disruption" during his childhood, but had no psychiatric conditions that would deprive him of the capacity to understand his actions.
......
Aleki was also given a three-year parole order and warned that due to his New Zealand citizenship he will likely face deportation following his release.
Man who claimed he was 'adopting a child' convicted of stealing toddler from Brisbane home
It's incredible, he's being released after less than a year. Are children safe from this man, is he getting help for these obsessions? It's amazing the selfishness and entitlement issues. Aleki suffered from disruptions in his own childhood and yet, felt the baby being raised by the grandmother wasn't suitable, did he crown himself a better parent?
