Australia - Paedophiles & sex offenders win right to work with children

“More than a dozen paedophiles, rapists and violent sex offenders have won the right to work with children through a series of court challenges.

Successful appeals at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) have resulted in over 12 working with children bans being overturned in just five years.

Those who have won their appeals include a man who was caught by police with a half-naked boy in his car.

This is absolutely outrageous. I’m so fed up with Australia being so lax in protecting innocent children.

It's not like, a new thing. It's five years worth of cases (that aren't considered bad enough to go on the sex offenders registry - they do have a permanent ban) who have gone through an administrative appeal, which is a fairly standard thing. The alternative is a blanket, no-appeals allowed, no-exceptions law. Which may very well be the right thing to do, not arguing it's not (as a parent I would argue I'd prefer that), but it's not exactly ~shocking~ that people are able to seek to have things overturned or changed on appeal and that occasionally (12x in 5yrs) a judge agrees with them. That's been a cornerstone of the Western legal system since ???

I agree that the right to appeal is a cornerstone of the legal system. I am shocked at some of the decisions from judges who ruled in favor of child rapists for example. I am equally shocked to read in the article that trafficking children is considered a lesser offense "People with less serious offences like trafficking children, upskirting and armed robbery are given a permit unless the Department of Justice — which assesses the applications — believes there is an "unjustifiable" risk to children."
