NSW inquest into mystery skeleton

"The skeletal remains of a man who was thought to be an Indigenous Australian and given to a museum are now the subject of a NSW coronial inquest.

After the remains were given to the Australian Museum an external forensic department concluded they were of Indigenous descent.

However, in 2009 the museum conducted its own analysis of the remains and determined the body was not Indigenous, and predominantly of European heritage.

Police inquiries have ruled out three missing people from the area and they are urging anyone with any information to come forward"

Oops I didn't realise there was a length limit to the headings. I don't know how to fix it.

The date of finding the remains was 19th August 1976.

Hmmm I wonder if any other Indigenous remains discovered are not Indigenous ?

"A skeleton that sat in a box at the Australian Museum for more than three decades after it was mistaken for Indigenous remains is finally getting its day in court – but police are appealing to the public for more information first.

A coronial inquest opened briefly on Thursday before adjourning so that investigators can gather more evidence in a bid to identify the bones – now confirmed to be an adult male of European descent who died up to 16 years prior to being found.
Investigators looked into three possible missing persons in the area, with no matches. DNA sampling led them nowhere.

In 2019, the skeleton went to Waikato University in New Zealand, where radio carbon testing was carried out and interpreted by a forensic anthropologist"

Poor lost man. Someone's son.

Police appeal about remains found 44 years ago in St Albans

Hawkesbury Police Area Command are appealing for information from the public as investigations continue into unidentified human remains that were found 44 years ago in St Albans.

In August 1976, human remains identified as a male aged between 25-45, and about 5-foot-7-inches to 6-foot tall, were located on the eastern embankment of the McDonald River, near Wrights Creek Road. A woollen cardigan and a pair of men's shorts were found with the remains.

I'm interested in why they went to the museum. I thought remains of aboriginals were handed back to be buried by the community.

They are handed back these days, but maybe back in 1976 when the remains were found that was not the case ?

You would think the woollen cardigan and shorts would have tipped them off that this wasn't a centuries old Indigenous skeleton.

Found on the bank of a river could mean a known drowning victim who wasn't reported missing because he was known to have drowned but the body wasn't found at the time?

The 2021 Coroner's Inquest is an interesting read https://coroners.nsw.gov.au/documen...TIFIED_HUMAN_REMAINS_LOCATED_AT_ST_ALBANS.pdf

- the remains were DNA tested and ruled out 3 missing persons from the area of the discovery

- flood records were presented to the Coroner police believed "death may have occurred a distance from where the remains were found and one explanation as to why only parts of the skeleton were found is that the remains could have been moved by the flow of the river."

- The Coroner could not make any findings, however:
