61-year-old Massachusetts psychotherapist Jerome Rubin has been jailed for 18 months in Perth, Australia after pleading guilty in a crash that killed his wife and a two-year-old girl five months ago. He was on the wrong side of the road at the time as Australians, like the British, drive on the left.

He went onto the wrong side of the road and slammed into a Mitsubishi Magna that was carrying four members of one family as it came around a bend.

(His wife) Mrs Scialo-Rubin was killed at the scene while two-year-old Carmen Marie Julius, who was in a child restraint in the back of the Magna, died the next day in Princess Margaret Hospital.

Mr Rubin’s daughter and Carmen’s father Ryan Julius — who was driving the Magna and suffered spinal injuries — and grandfather Gary Julius were seriously hurt, while Carmen’s mother Tina Marie Briscoe, who was in the back seat with her toddler daughter, was also injured.

Rubin will have to serve at least nine months before being considered for parole. His lawyer said he is a broken man whose relationship with his youngest daughter in Australia has been devastated and whose attempts to reach out to the family of the deceased child have been rebuffed. The judge took into account his good character, early guilty plea to charges of dangerous driving and the fact that no speeding, drugs or alcohol were involved.
