Australia- Two sisters in their 20s found dead inside Sydney unit had been there lengthy time, Suspicious deaths, June 2022

maybe stopped paying as they were dissatisfied with some aspect of the flat maybe ? Some people stop paying rent in the false notion it will force the landlord to respond to a repair.
Beginning to wonder if someone was paying the rent and sending meals to the apartment as a way of ''looking after the sisters'' but abruptly stopped doing it and/or, if their bank funds were frozen.

Also wondering if they tried to sell the car and if the reason they parked the car in the wrong spot, was an attempt to hide it.
speculation, imo.

''For weeks, NSW Police assured media the sisters 'well-connected' family in the Saudi kingdom were 'cooperating' and 'helping' with the investigation.

But it has since been alleged that the family blocked detectives from releasing photographs of the women as part of a public appeal to shed light on the baffling case.

Police confirmed to Daily Mail Australia their photos and identities were released in consultation with the coroner - not the sisters' family - almost two months after their bodies were found.''
I'm not sure why the DM is putting such a "coverup/conspiracy" spin on this. Many families in the West wouldn't want photos released if they believe their relatives committed suicide. Much less a conservative culture like Saudi Arabia.

I think it's quite possible their family dissapproved of these two and cut off contact/disowned them/eliminated financial support, whatever. (That happens a lot in the West...in my own family, for one). But that doesn't mean they sent someone out to kill them.

100% agree - if there is any hint the young women may have taken their own lives MOST people would not want this and in many religions it’s considered such a terrible sin that no one would speak of such a thing.

Almost apologized for posting a DM link, but it was the only new one available and frankly i was attempting to redirect a change in tone...
Usually, or so it seems, when young women are found deceased after expressing fear of someone or something, it is not the family who has harmed them, but an unrelated male. imo, speculation.

The money problem
is another twist in this terrible case.

Surely the sisters could have rented just a room somewhere for half the price of the apartment, no?

Or even seek help in a shelter for homeless women?

What about their jobs and earning money?

Usually families whose loved ones have been found dead don't refuse to co-operate with police.
They usually don't ask for it not to be investigated...

I posted a link a few pages back related to Freon poisoning (the coolant in air conditioning). Bacteria and toxic mold can also build up inside the A/C. I'm not sure if this applies to larger more commercial units or "central air" type systems? I also don't know if the cases of Freon poisoning came from exposure to the liquid itself or from inhaling toxic, bad air.

If it were poison from food or a faulty AC unit wouldn't that have been discovered by now?

@GoBuckeyes IIRC the skin turns bright pink/red due to oxygen levels. I believe cyanide causes skin to take on a blueish tint from lack of oxygen.

You'd think the moment either of them had these symptoms they would have called 911? Not gone into separate rooms.

@chimpface Appreciate your explanation. I went off thinking maybe the sisters were mixed up in some dangerous business that potentially led to their deaths.

I agree with the last post. In terms of two sisters being somewhat isolated and dependent on each other it would be easy for them to fall into some kind of "shared delusion" or to feed off/into each others fears. Between the two, there must have been one that was more dominant. Isn't that typically the way with siblings?
Going from memory here, but I think some of the discoloration occurs at or after consciousness is lost. I'm not sure they would have noticed in time.

This wasn't a usual family, however.

Yes. There would have been places for them to go, if they were desperate for a roof over their heads. imo

Even (or especially) if they had been foreign students. Foreign students have a lot of student support services available to them. These services were making sure that foreign students stranded here (when we closed our borders due to covid) were eating and staying stable.

I wonder if their claim for asylum had been rejected? They have to prove that they are true refugees to be granted asylum.

I know nothing about crime in Saudi Arabia, or people's attitudes towards it, towards police, towards Western media like the Daily Mail. Just that they follow Sharia law, which is based on Islam and has nothing to do with Western culture or values.

And they don't seem to be active on WS...

From the link above:

"Investigators were unable to say what the pair did for work, though both have registered ABNs from 2018 to an address in Wetherill Park."

What is the significance of this address?

Is it a kind of company/employment agency?

That could be their school address ... there is a TAFE in Wetherill Park, and Wetherill Park is adjacent to Fairfield - where they first lived.

TAFE schools are 'trade schools'. Where manual trades are learned - like painting, mechanic, electrician, etc - as well as financial/culinary/other trades.

TAFE schools can sometimes help facilitate employment for their students.

Could it have been more mundane? On the passport photos, the girls’ hair is uncovered. It was probably their latest photo, so the police wanted to release it. If the family shares conservative values, a photo with uncovered hair would be perceived in SA as, say, topless here. But all their own photos would show very different girls. Younger, hair covered. Maybe the relatives didn’t want their friends to see how much their girls had changed?

If it was, it would have been rejected under the dying days of the last Australian Federal Government (right wing, US Republican Party aligned) that lost the Federal Election to Labor in the 21 May. 2022 Federal Election. An ex-Government that sometimes went out of its way to demonstrate that it was tough/mean/uncaring on refugees and asylum seekers. Especially the ex-Prime Minister (Scott Morrison), who was the Minister for Immigration prior to becoming Prime Minister.

I believe that it has been confirmed that the girls had been in contact with a refugee service and were living in Australia on bridging visas. Women from Saudi seeking refuge in Australia can apply for a holiday visa or refugee status on arrival, and start the process immediately. Women from Saudi will generally be granted asylum easily and quickly, and will be able to work or study soon after arriving. (This was my friend’s experience when she escaped Saudi to live in Australia.)

I think it’s fairly reasonable to assume that they fled Saudi. Based on my friend’s experience having grown up in Saudi, it’s extremely unlikely if not impossible that they would have been allowed to travel to Australia alone to study. Women must be accompanied at all times and the punishments for not doing so are apparently severe, often at the hands of their families.

Hi Waverider - that is really good information as the process is to people who have not used it, or who have no contact with it, somewhat opaque. What you say also provides more detail on the sisters' early days. Tak!

Yes. That is plausible. By way of background. And the Morrison administration has form. Remember the case of Rahaf Mohammed. This young Saudi woman was fleeing her family and had reached Bangkok on her way to Australia before her family and Saudi authorities located her. They were attempting to get the Thai government to repatriate her, via Kuwait - against her will; she wanted to continue to Australia and seek asylum in that country. Following extensive publicity, Thai authorities abandoned their plans to forcibly return her to Kuwait (from where she would be repatriated to Saudi Arabia). Rahaf Mohammed was taken under the protection of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and granted refugee status. Rahaf Mohammed applied to Australia, and then official started dragging the chain and finding all sorts of excuses not to deal with her application with alacrity. This was almost certainly in compliance with the wishes of the then Morrison administration. [They did the same with the Afghanis who assisted Australia during the time Australian military forces were in that country - they forgot or delayed giving visas to these folks who now face and have experienced persecution by the Taliban.]
The Canadians stepped in. On 11 January 2019 she was granted asylum in Canada and arrived in Toronto the next day.
Whether there was a deal between Australia and Canada for this "solution", so as to preserve relations between Australia and Saudi Arabia, is not clear. Or it may well have been the usual behaviour of the Morrison administration which was very antipathetic towards refugees and foreigners in general. The minister overseeing this episode was the Hon. Peter Dutton, who, following the defeat of the Morrison administration at the May election national election, replaced Mr Morrison as leader of the conservative parties and is now leader of the opposition. (i.e. no longer in government).

I've seen a few young women on road works traffic control about 10 minutes drive from Canterbury NSW.

With all the COVID related job disruption since 2020, more than a few Sydney living women (and men) have switched industries to construction and road related ones.
bfew, that is a good point. I wonder if the disruptions to employment caused by the COVID lock downs and COVID in general, left the sisters' unemployed and short of money? I don't think anything had appeared in public from the sisters' employer or their workmates.

Excellent summary!

RBBM I find it a bit odd that both sisters applied for ABNs' and then both started working at a construction company in traffic control. Seems a strange choice for 2 young sisters trying to make a new life for themselves. JMO.

What about the boyfriend? Here is a story of a woman whom it's assumed was abducted after making a new life for herself: CANADA - Canada - Elnaz Hajtamiri, 37, Abducted following home invasion, Wasaga Beach, Ontario, 12 Jan 2022

Of note: Elnaz is also Iranian and the ex bf is looking suspicious. He is also bearded FWIW, just saying it's an odd coincidence.
Hi whitrhino. i agree. Why apply for an ABN. I did see a report, but can't locate it, that the address associated with the ABN is yet a third suburb, but the nature of the business at that address was not given.
I do not know enough about this, but I read, again I can't recall where, that construction companies often employ people as subcontractors and for that they need a tax number and an ABN. It is a way companies in Australia use to evade labour laws and basically exploit people, as contractors do not have the same rights as employees. I think the "gig economy" is part of this too.
Perhaps other people here know more detail.
