GONE TROPPO - NT CRIMES: A CLEAN shirt gave away this murderer who mutilated
his victim and told a psychiatrist that killing a person is just like thumping on a cockroach.

ANDY Albury has a fantasy.

He would arrive in a random town on any given day and start killing residents, one by one.

And the reason - to provoke sheer terror in his fellow man.

People would be in fear of their lives, thinking that they could be the next person to be killed.

"He is not seeking publicity or notoriety," one psychiatrist said.

"He simply gets pleasure out of the thought of having that degree of control over people.

Detectives investigating the suspected murder of Tony Jones in 1982 have executed a crime scene warrant in Hughenden this morning.

The investigation team returned to the township this week to continue following current lines of inquiry and potential leads.

The places of interest police have identified include the Grand Hotel and slaughter yards in Hughenden.

Three witnesses interviewed by detectives have stated that they spoke to Mr Jones in the hotel in November 1982.

This information has proved valuable in assisting police to piece together the last movements of Mr Jones, who was enroute to meet his brother in Mt Isa.

Whilst there have been media reports that Northern Territory prisoner Andy Albury is a potential suspect in the Tony Jones matter, there is no evidence to support those claims.

Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day

Police say they have made their biggest breakthrough in a decade while investigating one of Queensland's most mysterious cold cases.

Investigators looking into the 1982 disappearance of Tony Jones have declared a crime scene at an outback slaughter yard in Hughenden, about 380 kilometres west of Townsville.

They also have several persons of interest, but have not revealed further details about whether they are alive or reside in Hughenden.

Brian Jones, Tony's brother, says it's distressing that an abattoir has become the focus of the investigation.

"For 32 years you've had the trauma of not knowing and wishing you did know," the 60-year-old told AAP from his home in Perth.

"Then suddenly you hear something like that and you wonder whether you want to know or whether it could be worse than you could have ever have imagined."

DETECTIVES searched the slaughter yards on the outskirts of Hughenden for the first time yesterday, hoping to reveal the secrets behind the disappearance, and possible murder, of Anthony Jones more than 30 years ago.

Regional Crime Co-ordinator Detective Acting Super*intendant Cheryl Scanlon said the slaughter yards and Hughenden’s Grand Hotel were “two significant places of interest” in the investigation into the mysterious cold case.

It was the first time detectives secured a crime scene warrant to search the yards since fresh leads took police to Hughenden last month.

'A key person of interest in the disappearance of backpacker Tony Jones in north Queensland in 1982 will give evidence at a coronial inquest in Townsville this morning.'

'Townsville businessman Kevin Wright has been named as a person of interest, along with his friend John Eastaughffe.'

On Tuesday, Mr Wright's former partners, Natalie Parker and Geraldine Lamont-Stanford, gave evidence at the inquest that Mr Wright had admitted to killing someone.'

The inquest also heard from family friend Melissa Bell, who spoke of a drunken taxi ride with Mr Wright at a time when he was distraught about his break-up with Ms Parker.'

'Both women first gave a statement to police in late 2012.

Insufficient evidence to lay charges, police say

Mr Wright is due to give evidence today and Mr Eastaughffe will appear on Thursday.

The lead investigator in the case, Detective Sergeant John Maloney, has previously said there was insufficient evidence to press charges against the pair.'

In March 2014, police executed a search warrant at the slaughter yards in Hughenden, but it was unclear if any evidence was found.

Police had also named killer Andy Albury, who is serving a life sentence in Darwin, as a person of interest, as well as former Charters Towers policeman Merv Stevenson, now deceased.'

'Nearly 40 witnesses are set to give evidence at the inquest, which is set to run for three weeks.'

Police hope a $250,000 reward will finally smoke out the killer of an 18-year-old door-to-door bookseller, 44 years after she was murdered in far north Queensland.

Detectives believe Catherine Pamela Graham was murdered while selling educational books in Townsville on the evening of July 29, 1975, police said in a statement on Wednesday.

Ms Graham, whose body was found 18 kilometres outside the city on the Flinders Highway, died from head injuries.
