Police are growing “increasingly concerned” for a woman missing from Edinburgh since Friday night.

Averil Shepley, 47, was last seen in the Marchmont area of the capital at around 10.30pm on September 30.

She is described as white, around 5ft 7in tall, of slight build, with short dark hair.

When last seen, she was wearing a black woolly hat with toggles on each side and black trousers.

It is believed she may be wearing a bright pink Goretex jacket, and has a black and red rucksack in her possession.

I have a lot of questions about this case already. I am curious about the taxi journey described... I assume she'd avoid walking through The Meadows at night, which is sensible. But why are they looking for her in Silverknowes and Davidsons Mains, if she alighted at Queensferry Terrace? They must have info that leads them down there but are giving nothing away.

Maybe Edinburgh has changed a lot since my day (been away since the 00s) but not sure why you would avoid walking in a high risk area like The Meadows, just to get out of a cab and walk through Silverknowes? Maybe it's different there now.

If 192.com is correct, she wasn't going home either. Free directory enquiries from ukphonebook.com

The only person of that name I find is someone who works in the medical psychology field, no images on records I've turned up so impossible to know if it's the same Averil.

I hope she turns up safe and well.

I guess Queensferry Terrace could be classed as fairly near to Davidson’s Mains area. Thinking maybe she’s been seen on CCTV walking towards Davidson’s Mains/Silverknowes area after getting out the taxi at Queensferry terrace?

We are issuing a fresh appeal for information to help trace 47-year-old Averil Shepley, reported missing from Edinburgh last week.

Averil was last seen in the Marchmont area of the city around 10.30pm on Friday, 30 September.

Officers believe she has walked to Minto Street, hailed a taxi and travelled to Queensferry Road, near to the junction of Queensferry Terrace around 11pm.

She is described as white, around 5ft 7in tall, of slight build, with short dark hair. She was last seen wearing a black woolly hat with toggles on each side and black trousers.

She could also be wearing a bright pink Goretex jacket and have a black and red rucksack in her possession.

Chief Inspector Murray Tait said: "We are growing increasingly concerned for Averil’s welfare and need anyone who has seen her to please contact us.

"I’m asking people in the Silverknowes, Davidson’s Mains and Queensferry Road areas to please check their dash-cams or any private CCTV cameras for any relevant footage that could help us to trace her.

"I would also say to Averil directly, if she sees this appeal, please get in touch with officers or your family to let us know you are safe and well.”

Anyone with information which could assist is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 0090 of 1 October, 2022.

Are you Edinburgh yourself? I'm not sure how much my recollections of walking distances are clouded by passage of time (and most likely at least some level of inebriation!) My instinct though is I wouldn't get out of a taxi on Queensferry Terrace to walk to Silverknowes, unless something unexpected happened (like running out of money for the fare maybe).

Yes I’m Edinburgh born & bred (although not living there at the moment), but don’t know this part of town quite as well as other parts so my knowledge may be a hazy as yours!

Good point re running out of money so getting out and walking the rest of the way. Or possibly got out to meet someone? I guess they’ll have tracked down the taxi driver to ascertain if they have any insight on this.

I used to hang about that area a bit in my teens, knew people living off Queensferry Terrace, and lived in Davy Mains for a few months in my 20s, the very far end, and I can't imagine walking it, but then I'm not famed for my love of walking when I could drive or hop a cab instead. I hope there's some good news soon.

Body found on Cramond Island in search for missing Edinburgh woman last seen over two weeks ago

A body has been found in the search for missing Edinburgh woman Averil Shepley.
Police discovered the corpse of a woman on Cramond Island, near Queensferry, on Monday around 2.50pm.
The body was found during ongoing inquiries into Ms Shepley’s disappearance

This thread hasn't been marked as sadly, found deceased.
The thread will be marked when there is confirmation by LE and/or MSM that the body found has been identified as Ms. Shepley. The article quoted below states "Enquires to identify the body are ongoing and police remain at the scene." I'll also note that no where in the article does it mention whether the deceased's family has been notified which seems to be typical for cases originating in the UK, imo. Hopefully the appropriate entities will provide an update as soon as a formal identification has been made. Please notify WS staff when/if that time comes.

The link at the above post says "There has not yet been a formal identification"

I did a long search yesterday and haven't found any that says the body has been identified yet"

There hasn't been a news update on identification, as far as I have seen. Chances are the family haven't approved further update. The mod asked for "family notified", so I posted as requested, to keep the thread straight.
