The hikers, John Duncan and Douglas Kelley, both students at Northern Arizona University, said they saw what appeared to be the remains of a woman in Sycamore Creek about 16 miles west of Turkey Butte.

The two men accompanied Undersheriff Clark Cole of Williams yesterday morning on an aerial reconnaissance of the area and were able to pinpoint the location of the body to officers. They were unable to see the body from the air, however.

A deputy in Williams said the hikers believed the remains to be those of a woman in a green dress but they were unable to see a head or hands in the decomposing body.

A recovery party of nine men struggled out of rain-drenched Sycamore Canyon shortly after 3 a.m. today with the body of an unidentified woman.

Coconino County Sheriff Cecil Richardson said investigators would attempt today to identify the body and learn the cause of death. The woman had apparently been dead about 10 days or two weeks.

The body was reported late Sunday by two summer NAU students who hiked Saturday through the Wilderness Area: John Duncan and Douglas Kelley. The recovery party, including county deputies and Sheriff's Search and Rescue Unit members, drove as far as they could Monday afternoon. But vehicle problems slowed progress.

The men walked nearly five miles to find the body at a location below Sycamore Point and deep in the Canyon.

Before the search party went into the canyon, Undersheriff Clarke Cole had the two hikers examine slides of the area taken previously by Allyn Oureton. From the slides the fellows were able to pinpoint where they had seen the body.

Examination of the remains of the body indicated the woman was a Caucasian, about five feet four inches tall, about 50 to 55 years old and possible with grey, medium length hair. She wore two aluminum hair curlers in her hair. Dress was a three-quarter length shift, which with turquoise squares, vertical and horizontal lines.

The woman had a deformed left elbow, investigators said.

Two identifiable fingerprints and a dental description were also taken, investigators said.

The woman apparently died in the late summer or early winter of 1970, about a year before she was found, investigators said.
