Fourteen-year-old Emily Pike was last seen on January 27 near Mesa Drive and McKellips Rd. in Mesa, Ariz. She is a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, which has a reservation in rural Eastern Arizona. The main town on the rez is probably two hours east of Mesa.

Her body was found about 20 miles northeast of Globe, Ariz. on Forest Service Road 355 off Highway 60. It was near milepost 277. The body was dismembered and placed in several garbage bags. Those were found on February 14.

The location of her remains was near the rez, about two hours from where she was last seen. Globe is the closest town that's not located on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. It's about 20 minutes west of the town of San Carlos.

News reports indicate that she left on foot from her "home" in Mesa in January. A post on her mother's Facebook page mentions staff of group homes learning to be more aware, so "home" may not have been with her parents. I am not linking to her mom's social media or putting her name out there.

I was born and raised in the Globe-Miami area, so this hits home. I can't find any stories from before her body was found, although the Mesa PD did have a social media post about her disappearance. So sad that no one who might have seen her on the rez or in town was even aware she was missing. All the links below are about the discovery of the body and the aftermath.

Horrified at the level of callousness inflicted upon this poor child. Was she considered a runaway all the 2+ weeks before her remains were found? I was under the impression there would have to be a confirmed sighting of a missing child to be considered a runaway, but I don’t know the standards in AZ. What time is she believed to have died? I found a tribute on social media that implies she died in February, but if she went missing with several days left in January there would be a chance she could have died then. So many questions. I read about her last night and was hoping by the time i checked WS about it there would be an arrest made :( justice for this angel

Who can do this to a child. Please get them and then throw away the key.
These dismemberment cases seem to have been really taking off since lately. Used to be a rare thing to hear about a dismembered murdered victim, not so much lately.
Any criminal justice majors wanna run some statics?

Wth. What is wrong with people?

Reminds me of another case I randomly came across. A guy bludgeoned his mother with a hammer while she was asleep, then decapitated and dismembered her. When the cops got there later that morning, he was in his room playing Xbox. Because of his unusual last name, I looked into it further; turns out he's my 5th cousin. (There's definitely a WS thread about him, which I haven't commented on, yet.)

Some commenters above mentioned that it sounds like it was someone she was familiar with, due to the location. That's probably a likely assumption. I would think that dismemberment would be reserved for people you have absolutely no emotional attachment to, who you're trying to more easily dispose of. That seems to be the case in most of the ones you read about. It's common among abductions when the victims are murdered the same day. However, the case I mentioned earlier shows that it can happen when there's familiarity/emotional attachment also, and it doesn't seem like disposal was a factor in either case (in this one, it would've been just as easy to find/identify if she were whole, and easier clean-up/transport).

Milepost 277 on US-60 is more or less here: a quite convenient place..

She was found at 1:30 drive away from where she was last seen

I'm from a small island in Canada so my perspective could be off, but it seems since feb women from 11-18 have gone missing a lot in that region (mesa, Apache Creek). Belen Naranjo, violet Quiroga, keyana Macbeth, serena cox, Viviana sanchez, serenity wahlgren. All missing from Mesa, all women of colour, all aged 11-18, all missing in the last 2 months. Almost like a serial killer or maybe a trafficking ring at work, but I could be short sighted.

very troubling case. I am however pleased they have suspects and hope that an arrest is made soon. There is no justice though as this was a child. I think that the leak as terrible as it is, the leak is the only reason there is much coverage on this. I am personally getting frustrated with children being murdered after being classified as runaways and then nothing more is ever heard. It is happening in AZ a lot these days.

They have three suspects, but they didn’t tell their names yet.

awe, what a cutie :( bad enough to kill a beautiful child but to dismember her and discard her like so much garbage? How callous does one need to be to do that?

According to detectives, Emily’s torso and head were in large contractor trash bags, with her legs in another. They have not been able to find her arms and hands.

The autopsy showed visible face and head trauma.
