QUEEN CREEK, AZ — Authorities are searching for a 12-year-old boy who was reported missing Tuesday in Queen Creek.

Kelly Conklin was last seen around 4 p.m. in the area of Combs and Gantzel roads, according to Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

He is described as having dark black hair and hazel eyes. PCSO now says he was last seen wearing a black "GAP" hoodie with gray letters and sweats with multi-colored triangles. He was also seen wearing shoes.

PCSO says he previously ran away with a member of his household, but that child was located and is safe.

If you have any information call 520-866-5111.

This is not good. I hope KJ is in a safe place.

PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. — The parents of a missing San Tan Valley boy have been taken into custody for allegations involving child abuse, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office said.

Kelly "KJ" Conklin, 12, has been missing since Dec. 20 after he reportedly ran away with another member of his household. PCSO said the other child was later located and is safe.

But now the missing boy's parents, Kelly and Melissa Conklin, have been arrested by PCSO after detectives interviewed other children living in the home.

PCSO said the arrests of the parents are not directly related to the 12-year-old's disappearance.

KJ Conklin was last seen at a Walmart in Queen Creek on Dec. 20, around 8 p.m., PCSO said. He was wearing a black "GAP" hoodie with gray letters and sweats with multi-colored triangles.
Anyone with information on KJ can call 520-866-5111.

QUEEN CREEK, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) Following the arrests of the parents of a 12-year-old boy who was reported missing earlier this week, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office released new photos on Friday night of the boy. Kelly “KJ” Conklin ran away with an older brother on Tuesday afternoon. A spokesman for PCSO said KJ was seen at the Walmart in Queen Creek, near Rittenhouse and Ellsworth roads, also on Tuesday, around 8 p.m. The office released two photos of him wearing a black GAP hoodie with gray letters and sweatpants with multi-colored triangles, pushing a shopping cart. The older sibling, a 14-year-old boy, came back home, and that’s when investigators looked into the parents.

According to PCSO, detectives interviewed Conklin’s parents and other children in the home while investigating the boy’s disappearance. Kelly Conklin, 46, and Melissa Conklin, 39, were arrested on child abuse charges that deputies say are not directly tied to the disappearance of KJ. The two faced a judge on Friday afternoon. A bond of $5,000 was set for Kelly, while Melissa was allowed to be released on her own recognizance.

Deputies say there were eight kids in the house, ranging in age from 1 to 17 years old. PCSO says five of them are adopted, including KJ. Two others are foster kids, and one is the biological child. The Department of Child Safety has taken custody of the kids, PCSO said.

PCSO is asking neighbors to check their security cameras for videos of two children walking near Combs and Gantzel roads on Tuesday afternoon. For some, the arrests didn’t come as a shock because they’ve heard and seen Kelly Conklin make what they say are questionable parenting decisions.

I'm glad that KJ is now in a safe, warm place. This is a sad situation and I hope that he, and all of the children in the household, will receive the help they need.

Authorities say the 14-year-old brother, whose name has not been released, eventually returned home. When he did, his mother, 39-year-old Melissa Conklin, told police she attempted to confront him, according to the court records.

“Melissa stated as [the 14-year-old] was running to the house, Melissa advised she used a technique where she wraps both arms around [him] similar to a hug,” the court documents allege, according to FOX 10. “Melissa stated as she did this, [he] began to fight with her in an attempt to get away and at one point, Melissa stated she felt [him] punch her on the left side of the face.”

The kids’ father, 46-year-old Kelly Conklin, was reportedly sleeping at the time the confrontation began, but he awoke and went outside, and he saw the 14-year-old on top of Melissa with his hands around her neck.

“Kelly said he grabbed [the 14-year-old] by his shirt and slammed him to the ground and placed handcuffs on him,” the court documents state, according to FOX 10.

The boy was hospitalized and raised concerns with medical staff. He alleged that his father grabbed his body, threw his face into gravel, slammed him into a wall and choked him causing him to black out, FOX 10 reports, citing the court records. The boy also said his father lied to police.

The other kids in the home alleged other acts of child abuse. A girl who is mentally delayed alleged that Melissa struck her in the head using a bar from a paper towel holder. A child alleged that Kelly attempted to kill her by restraining her against a wall and displaying a knife. And a child said Kelly threatened her with a gun that was held on his hip.
