MCSO: Missing man's vehicle found abandoned with note in Tonto National Forest

According to MCSO, 60-year-old Michael Salvatore Mariani's vehicle was found on Forest Road 41 east of I-17 and Table Mesa Road on August 19.

Deputies say a passerby found Mariani's black 2017 Toyota RAV4 stuck in a wash with a note saying that he was injured and needed help.


Mariani is 5'7", weighs 180 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Officials say a man was reported missing after his vehicle was found abandoned in the Tonto National Forest.

Michael Salvatore Mariani’s vehicle was found on Forest Road 41, east of I-17 and Table Mesa Road on Thursday.

A passerby found the vehicle stuck in a wash with a note saying he was injured and needed help. The note said he was walking “west”, which would be toward I-17.

Search continues for man whose car was found with note asking for help

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office continued searching for a man whose vehicle was found abandoned in the Tonto National Forest with a note saying he was in need of help.

As of Friday afternoon, Mariani had yet to be located, MCSO said.

MCSO seems to update MP cases frequently; I scrolled past a handful of updated (found) posts as I was checking on Michael’s. Sadly, nothing additional has been reported. How sad!

Circumstances of Disappearance
On 08/19/2021, Michael Mariani's vehicle was located abandoned in the area of Forest Road 41 & 37, within the Tonto National Forest, Maricopa County.

His vehicle was found stuck in a wash with a note saying he was injured and needed help.

The note indicated he started walking "west" towards the I-17 but he has yet to be located.

This case makes me sad. Not sure if it’s the circumstances around his disappearance or if it’s the lack of attention…possibly a combination of the two…

I wonder if there have been any organized searches for him...I don't know how injured he was, but if he was hurt badly he might not have made it very far. At the very least he would havce probably stopped to rest. Maybe he was disoriented and didn't actually head west like the note said. Definitely a sad case, he must still be in that immediate area..

I looked at the map and he was near a split and you may be totally correct he might have headed south. I wish I had some time to run up there and look around. Been busy on tracking someDaniel Robinson stuff....

1) "injured" mentioned in note but police bulletin makes no mention of blood or other evidence in car of injury? Car "stuck in" wash is not "crashed" or "flipped" in wash.
2) Divorce finalized month prior.
3) Went Missing 1 day shy of Business Creation anniversary.
4) What was financial situation at time of divorce through missing date?
5) Life Insurance policy?
6) Past job experience?
