So much identifiable information on this guy! The trucker hat labelled "[unknown, possibly Pine or Zinc] Creek Lumber Co.," the knitted hat from the Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Association, the Bible notes in English copied in a neat hand, a bristled hair brush, prescription bottle, an inhaler(?), pocketknife, matches but seemingly no cigarettes, soft contact lenses (which were apparently new technology in 1985,) and a roadmap of the United States.

He had a vaccination scar on his left arm, probably from smallpox or TB immunization. The last regular childhood smallpox vaccines in America were administered in 1972, and by 1979 all other countries had followed.

The Bible notes appear to be thoughts on the passages, not necessarily direct copying. Maybe from a Bible study? I'll make an attempt at transcribing it here for folks who can't squint it out:
LUKE 14:12 (illegible, possibly phone numbers)

[...]if the Christian follows the example of Christ, willing to be persecuted, to be humble. Dennis [illegible last name, starting with K and ending with -lu]

Christ must be separate from God if he [went to? exist to?] properly set up the first example for Christian followers to take

Given the map, location, and the nature of the clothes he was wearing I would be inclined to say he was somebody trying to cross the border. But, he had some notes written in English, English lettering on his clothing, and soft contact lenses (which were not widely available in Latin America back then).
I am guessing he is either Native American or Latino and was local to Arizona.

Quartzite is right on Intersate 10 which is a major freeway that connects Los Angeles to Phoenix and beyond. Given the map, sports bag and additional clothing could he have been a hitchiker or have been traveling with someone? There's also lots of BLM land around there where people dry camp for free -- snowbirds with RV's and others live out there seasonally. No cause of death? IMO.

Does anyone know what the little white booklet looking item is that says USA in blue letters?

To me, his clothes seem like he may have bought them from goodwill and other charity clothing stores.

The lack of any Spanish written in the notebook indicates English was his native language and from the facial reconstruction he could've been native American. But I'm also thinking Vietnamese (he may have been a bit on the tall side at 5'9" but it's possible.)

I wonder if the young guy had family problems and it caused him to become transient/homeless?

A remote location but in the vicinity of Route 10, a major road from LA to Phoenix, as someone has already mentioned.

No wallet or ID was found, so I'm guessing the perp was probably a driver who stopped, killed him and disposed of anything identifying.

Too bad he didn't have his name and address written in his notebook somewhere.
