Is anybody able to explain how they were able to finally confirm him as Tommy Gayle Pool Jr. but it was not official for a while? It seems they were not 100% sure it was him but then were able to finally confirm?

Glad to see it’s official.

Rest peacefully now Tommy.

Confirmed as Tommy Gayle Pool Jr., 61 years old when he died.

I wonder if he was the son of 1964 American Olympian, Tommy Gayle Pool?

The combination of the names and then the Jr. makes it very likely he is indeed the son. If he was born in 1958, his father would have been 25, which fits. But the wife he is buried with would have been too young, maybe he was married twice?
I wonder what Tommy Jr.s story was and why he ended up homeless.

I have seen situations where the investigating genealogists can say that it is likely this person--someone with roughly these genetics (family trees built on shared DNA percentages, etc), and whose last known alive fits the circumstances--but there can be delays making direct DNA comparisons to either known close relatives or to existing samples of the missing person. The "River Guy" ended up needing an exhumation of his deceased father to finally confirm what was highly, highly probable. Cases of adoption, unknown parentage, or no living/findable/willing close relatives can also be issues for final confirmation.

So this man has been unclaimed and in the ClaimUs system for nearly 3 years now. How exactly did that happen? He was identified through genetic genealogy; that process involves finding close relatives. They should know exactly who his next of kin is!

Close DNA relatives doesn't mean they knew the person, or if they did know them, that they had a positive relationship. It also doesn't mean the living relatives haver money or inclination to handle funeral arrangements. There are all types of families out there. I guess at some point the remains will be disposed of via pauper's arrangements (or maybe not, perhaps that requires the next of kin's agreement too!)
