Just going over some NY area murders I recall as as kid. One was just a few blocks from me, it's the Adam Berwid case.
What the article fails to mention is that Eva Berwid did in fact speak to the 911 operator as she was being stabbed. The 911 system was pretty new but the entire call was recorded and played on many TV stations. So for weeks kids like me heard her screams of "He's kill-ing me-me, he's kill-ing me-ee" as she was being stabbed. I guess that was too much for the Village Voice but the media was in a way demonstrating the "success" of the 911 system.
Scariest of all, myself and a friend were at the Friendly's when Berwid was waiting there with his hunting knife. He was huddled in a far corner of the place and obviously disturbed. We were interviewed by police of course.
I suppose that recording still exists.
