Body matching description of boy, 13, reported missing found in Southern California

The body of a teenager matching the description of a 13-year-old boy reported missing over the weekend has been located in Oxnard, officials announced.

Family members of Oscar Omar Hernandez reported him missing on March 30 after he failed to return from visiting an acquaintance in Lancaster, an L.A. Police Department spokesperson told KTLA.

Detectives with LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division assumed the investigation and developed leads suggesting an area of interest densely packed with trees off Harbor Boulevard in Oxnard.

The investigation into Hernandez's disappearance and death is ongoing, with the LAPD and FBI working together to identify any person or persons of interest. The details and clues that led investigators to Oxnard have not been disclosed.

“Unfortunately, we believe we’ve discovered someone that’s related to an investigation that we’ve been working on for the last couple of days. We believe we’ve discovered the body of a missing juvenile,” LAPD Chief of Detectives Alan Hamilton told reporters.

“This is always a tragedy when we find someone of this age that is deceased and we promise that we are going to follow every lead, conduct a thorough investigation and report back to the public in a timely manner on our findings,” Chief Hamilton said.

Hope they're taking a close look at the person he was with and at the acquaintance's residence .
Did they part amicably or did something else happen ?

Rest in peace, Oscar !!!
My condolences to his family. :(

The family said they knew something was wrong when they tried to call Oscar and the acquaintance would answer, saying that the teen couldn’t come to the phone and then couldn’t remember when he dropped him back off at the train station to go home.

Not sure if they had phone pings or someone fessed up to where they hid him.
I think we will see an arrest of the acquaintance in Lancaster.

Investigators with the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division were able to develop information that led them to an area of interest in Oxnard. There, authorities organized a foot search of the area in collaboration with the FBI and located the body.

sounds as if LE has a good idea of who their POI is and may even have evidence tying that POI to the crime. Very sad news for the family but they won't face endless year of "unknowing" so I am glad his body was at least located.

Oscar's family told FOX 11 on Thursday that he was supposed to be with a man they described as his soccer coach on the day he went missing. Oscar played soccer regularly at Whitsett Park in North Hollywood.

Daniel Hernandez, Oscar's father, eventually got in touch with the coach, who said he had dropped Oscar off "near" their house. That's when the family called the police.

Still reeling from the loss, Alejandra said her family last saw the young boy on Friday after dropping him off at a San Fernando Valley Metrolink station at 7 p.m. so he could meet his soccer coach in Lancaster. Oscar and his coach were introduced to each other through an afterschool soccer program at Whittsett Park in North Hollywood, according to the family.

"His soccer coach made soccer jerseys," Alejandra said in Spanish. "He had taken other soccer teammates to help him, and that's why my brother went."

Alejandra added that a sibling called Oscar on Friday night to check on him, but the coach answered the phone.

"Then at 9 p.m. my brother called Oscar but the coach answered," Alejandra said in Spanish. "He said Oscar couldn't answer because his hands were full of paint."

will be very interested in what this soccer coach has to say. I get why the family finds it all very sus. What isn't clear is was the coach answering his own phone (meaning family had his number) or whether he was answering Oscar's phone. Either way they call for Oscar he is said to be there but cannot take the call because he is covered in paint. Then the coach claims to have dropped him off at a time he can't quite recall at the train station then the story seems to be Oscar was dropped off "near" his home by this coach.

San Fernando Valley to Oxnard

My understanding is Oscar lived in San Fernando Valley. Was travelling to see the soccer coach in Lancaster. Coach says he took him to train station then says he dropped him off near home. Why is his body found in Oxnard?

Something smells bad.

Who covers jerseys with paint? Aren't most numbers and such vinyls these days?

MOO

“We had that person at our home,” Alejandra said. “He even helped us look for Oscar. We never thought he would harm him.”

"[Saturday] morning, we tried calling," Alejandra said. "We tried to get his location using Google, but it only said he was in California, and we didn't get an exact location."

After he didn't answer any of their phone calls, the family tried texting Oscar's phone and finally got a message back.

"My brother said, 'I'm going to a party,'" Alejandra said."My [other] brother said, 'You can't go, we aren't giving you permission to go."

Oscar then texted his family that he was in North Hollywood and refused to be picked up at Whitsett Park, according to his sister. Those were the last texts relatives said they received from the 13-year-old's phone. They searched for Oscar throughout Saturday night but couldn't find him.

"We started contacting his friends, but there was never a party," Alejandra said. "His friends never saw him."
Teen found dead in Ventura County last seen at Metrolink station, family says

So this article clears up for me whose phone was being called to try to reach Oscar. Oscar's phone that the coach answered saying he couldn't come to the phone. Oscar's phone the family were receiving texts from purporting to be Oscar. Phone records are going to be huge in this case. Wonder how long it will take LE to obtain Oscar's phone data?

I don't believe Oscar was texting his family that Saturday. It will also be very interesting to see the phone data of the coach. JMO That should shed some light on which of the coach's stories are true, he dropped him at the station or dropped him near his home or (as I suspect) "dropped" him in Oxnard.in the wooded area alongside the road. ETA I hope they have the probable cause needed to get that individual's phone records.
