The year seems determined to go out with a bang so far as bucket-kickings are concerned.

Bardot, like Monroe have just remained idolled icons...
The Guardian article is very good... pretty sure it was written way in advance of her death however!
But I realised, while reading, that I really knew none of her films or relationships or anything except she was a film siren and became an animal activist.
Tis what an idolled icon is.

Screen siren Brigitte Bardot, whose portrayals of free-spirited ingenues made her an international sex symbol and the pride of France, and who turned her back on movie stardom in 1973 to become an animal rights activist, has died, according to French media and The Associated Press.

She was 91.

Bruno Jacquelin, of the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the protection of animals, told The Associated Press that she died at her home in southern France. He did not provide a cause of death, and said no arrangements have yet been made for funeral or memorial services. She had been hospitalized last month after a period of ill health...

All the UK broadsheets keep a library of obits of famous people or those of some significance such as lesser known politicians, ready for when they die. The obits are often initially compiled decades before the subject's demise and updated as and when there are developments in their biography, eg a new marriage or a divorce, winning some sort of gong or award, etc.

One of the things I liked/admired about Brigitte Bardot was that she didn't seem to mind to let the world see her aging, when so many other women (and men), especially those on the screen, are doing their very best in all ways possible to look as if aging won't touch them.

Interesting that most of the obits have been quiet on some of the truly terrible things she said. She was an outspoken homophobe and racist, being fined several times for inciting racial hatred. She was also a terrible mother, abandoning her son and referring to him as the 'object of my misfortune' and as a 'cancerous tumour'.

I prefer accurate obits when people die over ones that glaze over the not-so-nice bits of deceased people, I guess.

Brigitte Bardot to be buried by the sea in Saint-Tropez

French film icon Brigitte Bardot, who died on Sunday aged 91, will be ‍buried in a cemetery by the sea in the French Riviera resort of Saint-Tropez.

The funeral ceremony will be held on January 7 at 9pm AEDT at Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption church in Saint-Tropez, the municipality said on Monday (local time

The burial will be held in the strictest privacy but there will be a tribute open to locals and fans at the Pre des Pecheurs area in the old town quarter called La Ponche, ‌the historic centre of the former fishing village.

Bardot, who became a symbol of 1950s and ‍1960s France, made her home in the resort in 1958 where she said she found solace among animals and dedicated her life to their welfare.

“She was lovely, lovely, there’s no other word. Yes, we will really miss her,” Saint-Tropez resident Philippe Volmier told Reuters.
