1 dead, 14 hospitalized after drug overdose in California

Police say a 'mass overdose' of the synthetic opioid fentanyl at a house in Chico, California, has left one man dead and 12 more hospitalized.

According to The Sacramento Bee, authorities arrived at a home on the 1100 block of Santana Court around 9am on Saturday after receiving a 911 call from someone inside.

'Upon arrival, Chico police officers found multiple individuals in what appeared to be life-threatening overdose conditions,' Chico Police Chief Michael O'Brien said at a news conference.

''Every indication - talking to medical staff, talking to doctors - everything is consistent with a fentanyl or fentanyl similar-type overdose.'

O'Brien said police performed CPR and administered six doses of naloxone, which is used to treat and reverse the effects of narcotic overdoses.

Two first responders from the Chico police officers were among those treated for exposure to Fentanyl or a Fentanyl-like substance during the incident.

Update: Fentanyl suspected in 13 overdoses in Chico. One person died

It's more upsetting to me that two LE officers were ill and had to go to the hospital because of this

Spreading the word in accordance to the information I have received from friends in the US (i am european).... those who are willing, try to carry Narcan (naloxone) with you. You could save someone's life. As scary as this is, naloxone saved those who survived's lives. The opioid epidemic won't be solved by needless deaths of addicts, but by the change in systemic conditions that encourage addiction as a form of escapism from the alienation of everyday life. More and more heroin is also mixed with fentanyl and it's sad. It's hard to speak on this, I had addiction in my family which made me never touch drugs (yet learn so much about them, it's strange how the mind works), but I understand those who succumbed to addiction or want to experiment.

I'm sad that you had to deal with an addiction in your family -- hoping things have improved for all of you. It's a problem that has continually gotten worse here in the US, and that is probably true where you are, too.

Thanks for your thoughts, as well. It would be interesting to see how law enforcement, etc., in your country or area deal with this on-going problem.

We're glad to have you with us.
