Hmm, I wasn't sure where to put this one... it is a bizarre crime. But in the article the wife says "authorities have exaggerated the extent of her injuries." Her defense of him is nearly as criminal as what he did to her!

Wife loses lip after calling man short

Akano Nzerem, 54, of South San Francisco, is charged with felony counts of domestic violence, mayhem, false imprisonment, battery and making criminal threats.


Nzerem told police he was provoked by his wife attacking him first and calling him a short man, according to the district attorney's office.


Police said Nzerem shoved aside his 16-year-old daughter when she tried to intervene in the argument. He then allegedly grabbed his wife in a bear hug and bit off her lip.


Police recovered the lip from the floor but doctors were unable to reattach it. Nzerem's wife said authorities have exaggerated the extent of her injuries.

The South San Francisco man who bit off his wife’s lip after she called him short and spent time at Napa State Hospital after being found unfit for trial is facing up to two years in prison but won’t be sentenced until April.

Akano Nzerem, 56, pleaded no contest in early December to felony domestic violence and inflicting great bodily injury. Nzerem was expected to be sentenced yesterday but his attorney sought four more weeks to secure records.

Before heading to trial, Nzerem was deemed incompetent and sent to Napa State Hospital. He returned to San Mateo County last fall for prosecution and settled his case Dec. 9.

Aside from the criminal case, Nzerem is also facing a civil suit by his bail bondsman who claims he was not paid more than $17,000 toward the $500,000 bail bond posted. The suit also names Nzerem’s wife, Ifeyinwa Jacinta Nzerem, who has stood by him since.

Nzerem is currently in custody in lieu of $250,000.
