In the last week, Mendocino County residents have had to grapple with the tragic news that two young women have been found dead and in both circumstances, law enforcement has characterized their deaths as “suspicious.”

The shared traits between these two deaths including their gender, their youth, their residence in Mendocino County, their characterization as “suspicious,” and the fact the cases emerged just days after each other have led many locals to speculate a serial killer is behind the deaths.

Last Sunday, January 8, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) announced they had recovered a body from a field near the intersection of Highway 101 and Geysers Road near the Mendocino/Sonoma County line. On Tuesday, January 11, SCSO Sergeant Juan Valencia revealed the body was that of 33-year-old Amber Dillon, a Willits woman whose death he deemed “suspicious.”

News of the second death broke on the same day that SCSO identified Dillon. Initially, a dead body was reported in the vicinity of Ukiah’s Christy Lane. Three days later, the decedent found near Christy Lane was officially identified as 22-year-old Alyssa Mae Sawdey from Ukiah.

The press release indicated MCSO conducted a forensic autopsy on her body and results are pending and expected to take several weeks. As of now, the press release stated Sawdey’s death is considered “suspicious.”

Regarding Dillon, Sheriff Kendall told us he could not comment due to the case being under the SCSO’s jurisdiction.

f I thought we had a serial killer out there, the public would be the first to know,” Sheriff Kendall reassured the community.

If you know anything about the circumstances surrounding Dillon’s death, contact Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 565-2650. If you have information about Sawdey’s death, contact Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office at 707-234-2100 or the WeTip anonymous crime reporting hotline at 800-782-7463

Sure, LE has never lied to the public before or hidden the fact of a serial killer in the community. I do hope the killer or killers are found quickly and the families of the victims find some measure of peace.

Yep, I thought the very same thing as soon as I read that. I instantly think back to the Cassidy Rainwater case.

Seriously, he should have just left that part out. I saw the other County Sheriff wasn’t quoted in the article. It’ll come back to bite him!

We reached out to all three law enforcement agencies investigating the deaths of these four women. All, in their own way, made it clear there was no known connection between these tragedies and these cases are not a result of any serial killer preying on women.

These rumors first emerged after two women were found deceased under suspicious circumstances mere days after one another. The first was 33-year-old Willits woman Amber Dillon who was discovered in a field off Highway 101 near the Mendocino/Sonoma County line on January 7, 2022. A press release from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office stated Violent Crimes Investigators combed the area for evidence on the following day deeming the death as “suspicious.”

It was Tuesday, January 11, 2022, when SCSO Sergeant Juan Valencia revealed to us the name Amber Dillon when reports emerged of a body being found in Ukiah. After three days, MCSO identified the decedent as a 22-year-old Ukiah woman Alyssa Mae Sawdey and labeled the death as “suspicious” requiring a forensic autopsy that could take several weeks to complete.

I can't find any information re Amber or Alyssa. Were they reported missing before their remains were found? Does anyone know anything else about the circumstances? Jmo but how can law enforcement rule out a connection immediately if both deaths are being deemed "suspicious"

Coroner: Woman found dead in field near Cloverdale died of brain injury; questions remain

A 33-year-old woman whose body was found in a remote area near Cloverdale died of brain injury, according to a report from the Sonoma County coroner.

But even with the results of an autopsy, which were released to The Press Democrat this week, investigators remain puzzled about the circumstances that lead to the “suspicious” death of Amber Dillon, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

After completing an autopsy, the Coroner Unit determined that the cause of death was “intraparenchymal hemorrhage,” which is bleeding in the brain, and “cerebral edema of uncertain etiology,” which is fluid buildup in the brain from an unknown cause.

Hypothermia, blunt-force head injuries and “methamphetamine abuse” also contributed to the death, according to the coroner’s report.
