Barbara Zhan Crane

Barbara Zhan Crane – The Charley Project

Whatever happened to Barbie? Former pal's push stirs case of Willits woman missing since spring 2020 • The Mendocino Voice | Mendocino County, CA (great article)

On July 25, 2020, the Fort Bragg Police Department was notified that Barbara Crane had not been in contact with family members since May 13, 2020. As Crane was entered into the Missing and Unidentified Persons System (MUPS), Officers learned that Crane’s last known location to be in Willits, California.

Barbara Zhan Shealor was front-page news on New Years’ Day 1972. She was the first baby of that year born in Fort Bragg, at the Mendocino Coast District Hospital. She and her mom, Tara, were featured in a story in the Fort Bragg Advocate News.

Her longtime best friend, Brandi Sallinen, fears Barbie Shealor could be headline news on both ends of her life.

“I fear Barbie is dead. She has never been gone from this area for any length of time,” said Brandy.

Barbie lived on and off the streets for years and had substance abuse issues. Brandy was afraid her case wouldn't be taken seriously, so she took it upon herself to raise awareness for her best friend's disappearance.

Barbie and Brandy’s fathers both worked at the old Georgia Pacific Lumber Mill. Their grandmothers were both from Oklahoma and best friends. Their mothers were also best friends.

“I was raised with her like a sister, and we became best friends too. We carried on the tradition,” said Sallinen. "Before she hit rock bottom, she was always there for me when I needed it."

Sallinen knocked on doors at addresses where Barbie once lived or were listed on background search websites but found no warm leads. Sallinen made fliers and distributed them around Fort Bragg. She contacted an investigation firm, law enforcement, Barbie’s family members, and Alan Rexrode, who is the last known person to see her.

“I wouldn’t know where to look,” Alan Rexrode explained. Rexrode can’t remember what month Barbie left but said in an interview she left from the Willits Safeway Parking lot with a clean-cut guy, 35-40 years old in a Ford F-250 diesel red truck with Montana plates. Rexrode said he just watched her leave — he didn’t go up to the truck or meet the stranger.

“It looked like they were friends,” he told The Mendocino Voice.

“We were kind of free spirits,” Rexrode said. “I’m trying to stay positive. I figure she has to be coming back for her dogs. We weren’t super lovey-dovey but we were friends and I’m totally concerned about her.” Rexrode called this reporter in an effort to help find the missing woman, in the hopes what he saw might help find her. There are no suspects or even a public working theory of where Barbie is.

Yes, she certainly does deserve to be found. There are no throw-away people, regardless of their troubles or lifestyle. What a good friend Barbie has in Brandy! Here’s hoping her efforts pay off.
Well keep your eyes peeled... I'll be writing a little something so that she gets covered on YouTube this summer. <3

ITA Brandi is such a good friend! More like a sister. And the dogs! The dogs! That part gets me:

“And she wouldn’t have left her dogs,” Sallinen explained. “She babied them. She was a weirdo about her dogs. I remember her sleeping in her car rather than in the house because the dogs couldn’t be in there.”

The ex BF says she left instructions for three course meals for the dogs - wonder if he still has that note?

And this “On 07/28/2020, Shealor spoke with an advisor regarding financial support while in Willits, CA,” the police press release stated. Naulty said that lead is being investigated to see if it was indeed Barbara Shealor who made the contact.

I hope they can somehow track who made that call!

RSBBM

Her last known local contact was in July 2020, the press release said. Police said all leads had been exhausted so it was time to reach out to the public. The ongoing investigation led to the need to follow up in Fort Bragg. An address search for her shows she has lived on John Hyman and South Streets in Fort Bragg in the past and in Montana.

I wonder if LE has contacted anyone near where she used to live in MT? Sounds like there's the possibility she was familiar w/the person in the red truck with MT plates, if she did in fact leave with someone in a truck. :)

Well keep your eyes peeled... I'll be writing a little something so that she gets covered on YouTube this summer. <3
bump for Barbie. I'm writing an article about this case as we speak. She deserves so much more!

Can't wait to read it. Fill us in, Chica? Your kindness in wanting justice for Barbie speaks volumes.

Yes, indeed! And, please, if your writing is published and covered on a WS approved source, please link it.

Sounds like barbie would not voluntarily leave her dog babies. Hello barbie's friend and welcome, you may have to become a verified insider.

Details of Disappearance

Crane was last seen on May 13, 2020. She was living at the Sleepy Time RV Park in the 30600 block of U.S. Highway 101 in Willits, California at the time.

Her roommate stated he last saw her in the parking lot of a Safeway in Willits, and that she left with a man driving a Ford F-250 diesel pickup truck with Montana license plates. Her roommate described the man as 35 to 40 years old and clean-cut, and said Crane appeared to know him.

Crane left her dogs behind, but took all her other belongings, and she left a note for her roommate giving instructions on how to feed her dogs. He expected she would return, but she never did and has never been heard from again. She has previously been homeless and lived on the streets, and it's not uncharacteristic of her to drop out of sight for a month or two, but she's never been out of touch with her family for this long. It's also unlike her to abandon her dogs, whom she was very close to and took good care of. Her daughter reported her missing on July 25.

The circumstances of Crane's disappearance are unclear, but her loved ones believe she may have come to harm. Her case remains unsolved.
