Fresno County Sheriff's Office

Eight Year Old Boy Safely Escapes Would Be Abductor

On the evening of January 3rd, Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a home near the intersection of S. Peach and E. Nebraska Avenues for a report of a possible kidnapping. Deputies spoke with the mother of an eight year old boy, who claimed her child was the target of an abduction. Deputies learned the incident took place in the middle of the afternoon on January 2nd.

The child explained that he was playing outside his home by himself, along a canal bank, which runs between S. Peach and S. Minnewawa Avenues. Suddenly, he felt a person grab him from behind and cover his eyes. The person, believed to be an adult man, picked him up and ran as he carried him away. The man uncovered the boy’s eyes once he reached a vehicle parked on a dirt road near a grape vineyard. The boy described the pickup truck as being a newer model, white in color, with a white bed cover and a tinted rear window. The man tossed the boy into the bed of the truck and lowered the bed cover. The truck then began to drive away. After it traveled a short distance, the driver stopped. The boy then made a decision to try and escape. He was able to push open the bed cover, climb over the tailgate and out of the bed. He began to run the opposite direction and looked back to see the truck driving away from him. It does not appear the driver knew the boy had escaped. The boy was able to recognize where he was and found his way back home. Once there, he told his mom everything he had just experienced.

The boy’s mom then began to search the area for a pickup truck matching the description. After not finding anything, she decided to call the Sheriff’s Office the next day to make a report. Detectives have since taken over this case and are searching for leads. Video surveillance could also be helpful to generate leads. Detectives would like to speak with anyone who has cameras along the following roadways: E. Floral, S. Peach, E. Nebraska, E. Mountain View and S. Clovis Avenues.

If anyone has any information that can help further this investigation, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at (559) 600-3111. You may also contact Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-7867 or www.valleycrimestoppers.org You will remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.

Incredible. What a brave little guy.

He is a smart boy and I am glad he jumped and ran. What a good decision.

I do wonder why Mom waited until the next day to call it in. If the cops had the BOLO out that same day, maybe they could have caught that dangerous creep. Scary scary man...

Yeah, me too. I'm just glad this one ended well.

Maybe she didn't believe the story?

Maybe she didn't believe the story?

This is the only logical reason I can think of to not call immediately.
If she thought he made it up and then the next day realized it's serious?

I don't know. It's odd. I can't put my finger on why... but something is odd here.

Maybe she didn't believe him at first but later on started to believe? Like, maybe he was in trouble for something and she thought he was full of it but later something made her think again?

Yes. He was probably late coming home and Mom was mad, and so she thought his ' i was kidnapped' story was just a kid's excuse to get out of trouble. But maybe as time went on, she saw how upset he really was?

I'm glad they are requesting the video, though I still wish the mother had reported it immediately. Unless she knew for a fact it wasn't true, like she could see him the whole time... there wasn't really a reason to not report it. What if the suspect had grabbed another child who didn't escape in the meantime?

I'm jaded from so many recent stories that ended up not being what they appeared. Something just feels very off to me here but I am just not sure what it is. However I think within a week we will know what happened here, it shouldn't take long to get those videos.

An abductor throwing a child in the bed of a truck is interesting too. I could see the toolbox maybe, but the actual bed of the truck? That is an odd choice. I presume it had a toneau cover on it. I can't imagine trying to open/lift that from the inside! Though my Dad got the "display" one for cheap so ours never did open easily.

So unnerving for the people in the area I am sure.

ISTR that happened to Hailey Owens. That case was in full view of witnesses who pursued, but the perpetrator got away and killed her before being apprehended. Tragic.

Oh boy. Someone is in trouble. I hope it is as innocent as we thought it might be. Still, I hope that the police are not wrong. I still much prefer this to the alternative.

Yah, I was wondering about that myself.

I remember when my daughter was 13, she and her best friend missed their curfew with us. I was driving all around looking everywhere, starting to panic. When my son finally found them, at dusk, walking away from a local park, they told us a bizarre story about some teen boys who started talking to them, then wouldn't let them leave the park. Lots of confusing details in their story......became pretty obvious they were just trying to avoid being grounded for missing curfew.

I was wondering if he was doing a similar thing. That is probably why Mom didn't call police on the first day.

Honestly, not surprised. But it's right that the police did investigate, because as with Hailey, sometimes it's true.
