Police investigate weekend disappearance of East Bay teenager

A search is ongoing for an East Bay teenager who police say went missing overnight during the long weekend.

The Pleasant Hill Police Department on Monday announced it was looking for 15-year-old Brandon Abbett. Police said he left his home between 10 p.m. on Sunday and 9 a.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with an unknown destination.

Abbett is 5-foot-6 and weighs 107 pounds, according to the department. Police said they couldn't provide a description of the clothing the brown-haired, blue-eyed teenager was wearing.

An investigation into Abbett's disappearance is "active," Pleasant Hill police said. Anyone with more information can call the department at (925) 288-4600, referencing case no. 22-174.

His dad is actively posting on the Pleasant Hill police dept FB, and he has given some additional information:

His eyes are not blue. They are "hazel - somewhat green/blue/brown."

He was wearing reddish-brown sweatpants and either black or white sneakers (Vans.) Likely a Vans sweatshirt.

He doesn't have a phone or a bank card.

Maybe he was just meeting a girlfriend or meeting some friends that night for a couple of illegal beers -- no biggie, just an hour or so -- and something happened. Hit by a car, fell and was injured...
How were things at home? Running to or running from?
Too many days.

Brandon is still missing, and the FBI is now involved. The FBI poster has three new pictures in addition to the two that were previously released. I feel so sorry for his dad. In one of his early posts on PHPD Facebook, he said that he now understands the meaning of the word "despair," and now almost two months have passed and Brandon still hasn't been found.

It is good to see that with the FBI involvement, all of the local Bay Area TV stations are now covering the case. This link is from KGO TV (ABC) in San Francisco.

FBI asking for help in locating Pleasant Hill teen, missing for nearly 2 months

PLEASANT HILL, Calif. (KGO) -- The Federal Bureau of Investigation is asking the public for help with locating a Bay Area teenager who has been missing for nearly two months.

Brandon Abbett, 15, went missing from his home in Pleasant Hill sometime between Jan. 16 and the 17, according to the FBI.

Authorities say he has not been seen or heard from since.

Abbett is described as Caucasian, 5'6", has brown hair and weighs about 107 pounds.

Brandon's father, Andrew Abbett, provided the following statement on behalf of his family:

"Brandon's a son, a brother, a friend, a grandson, a nephew. He means the World to us, and so much to the people who know him. Brandon's upbeat presence impacts so many of us who are around him in a positive way, and without him around it's been very difficult for us to carry on with our everyday lives without knowing if he is ok and safe. We hope that there is someone out there who may know something about where Brandon is, even if it seems small and insignificant.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to the FBI and report anything you may know. No detail is too small to be reported. Brandon's family and friends miss him very much and want nothing but his safe return home. Brandon, if you are seeing or reading this, we love you and miss you dearly, so if you can reach out and contact us, please do. We just want to make sure you are safe.

Love, Your Family.
"

I'm getting a feeling that this may be a suicide, sadly.

I hope I'm wrong, but.....
What would make you think that? I've seen very few details. Very sad that it's been almost a year.

I never thought he would be missing this long. I check up on him often hoping to see that he has been found. Feel so sorry for his dad and family who will be without him this Christmas.

Well, surely it has to be a very real possibility?
Especially leaving his phone at home. And disappearing overnight.
And he's been missing for a year, not a few weeks.
Suicide in older teens and young men is quite high on the statistic list, sadly.

Agree. The FBIs involvement makes me think it may be something nefarious, though. MOO I could be completely wrong.

Abbett admitted it’s not the typical missing child case that gets attention. Brandon was quiet and had a small circle of friends at an age when some rebellion is expected from teenage boys. Brandon’s parents had a contentious divorce, then years of custody battles. Jade, now 18, told stories of their mother trying to convince her to leave her father’s home, even if it meant traveling to another state.

Abbett said some media outlets showed up to do stories about his son’s disappearance, only to pack up and leave once they heard the circumstances.

“They figure there’s another parent involved and they don’t want to get in the middle of a parental thing,” Abbett said. “Even if he went willingly, he’s underage. It’s there’s just a different level of sensationalism.”
