The details here seem to be in conflict with messages posted in April on another site (a history/genealogy site) by his great nephew who is researching the family history and has hit a brick wall with this person. He says that Carl was in a car accident in Louisville, Kentucky on 25 December 1950, was taken to hospital (Nichols Hospital?) and subsequently walked out never to be seen again. So the location and date is different. The only explanations seem to be either that NamUs is wrong or that new information emerged after the posts only one month ago. The attached clipping from The Louisville Courier Journal relates to the accident and (according to the posts) the nephew has had it confirmed by family members that this is the right person.

Agreed and it is a bit confusing. According to the missing persons report, his last known whereabouts was San Francisco in October of 1951, over a year after the car accident in Kentucky if it was indeed on Christmas Day, 1950. So why do many reports state he was never seen again after leaving the hospital in 1950? Was that referring to the last time his family saw him and/or when he was reported missing?

The nephew also stated "I know that after he went missing the MP's would randomly show up at my great grandmothers house to see if he had been in contact. The last trace of him is the noted car accident."

Assuming MP's were sniffing around because Carl was still on active duty and considered AWOL. If he was active in the military, when was his last time reporting for duty? Who reported him missing, the military or the family? Also assuming he was stationed in California?

The NamUs map link in a previous post above shows his last known whereabouts was on the corner of Van Ness Avenue and Market Street in San Francisco. Was this just a generalized location or was this the actual place he was last seen? Was there something significant at that location? Who was the source claiming to have seen him there? It seems strange as to why he was never in touch with his family again after he left the hospital but is allegedly seen a year later in San Francisco. The San Fran angle and the source who provided it should be investigated more thoroughly.

Missing since 23 October 1951

Thought to be older, but by the sound of it the body was pretty messed up. Only thing that might tie him to Carl was the timing, the location and an Army issue belt.

His mother, born Sue Van Hook, died as Sue Correll in 1998. The obituary at The Courier-Journal from Louisville, Kentucky does not mention Carl. Carl appears in the 1950 census with his mother and stepfather (the Moody's divorced in 1946). At that time he was not in the forces so seems to have been enrolled for only a short period when he went missing (a very short time if he disappeared in late 1950 as suggested by his great nephew) . One obvious possibility is that his disappearance was related to dissatisfaction with the forces or concern about Korea. Whilst the cases of draft avoidance and AWOLs are better known for the Vietnam war there were material numbers of cases at the time of Korea as well. If he went missing at the reported date of October 1951 this closely followed the introduction of the draft and clear increase in the intensity of the war. It would be useful to know if he was an early draftee. All of this may be completely unrelated to his disappearance but it would be useful to know his military status and date and method of entry to the military.
