Thinking about Corinne... and my own younger years.
There are things I wonder about and it may be totally irrelevant and probably is, but...
I was hitchhiking - not a lot, but often. Sometimes there was just no other way to get places. And safety? Its not like walking on the side of the road was safe with no sidewalks. Staying at a place wasnt always safe. Buses, trains, even cabs (even if someone had that kind of money and almost no teenage girls in my area did, ever, even if some cabs were available - which was also: rare) bad things were happening to people there as well.
We kinda tried to do our best to keep ourself safe... or maybe "safest in the circumstances given". We talked about it, we shared our experiences even though we werent all friends, or close.
I mean like... one girl, lets call her Anna. Anna would never - never ever ever get into a car with single man, not to mention multiple males. No matter the hurry she was in, no matter if it was a nicely looking grandpa. She wouldnt.
And obviously I cant and couldnt tell with 100% accuracy cause some unpredictable or unknown to me factors could go into play, but I think that there was at least half a dozen of people who knew that about Anna - probably more. And pretty sure if any of us would hear that Anna was seen getting into a car with a guy we would assume that wow, that must be her dad or brother, cause otherwise no way unless someone forced her to get in.
Other girl would never get into a truck. Another would never hitchike after dark. And yet another would take literally any ride offered to her, even if it meant sitting on somebodys bike as a passenger.
What Im trying to say is that people have their habits, their rules, and reasons that are often known to others - and even as simple thing as the type of car and gender/age/number of people seen in the vehicle could tell a lot, bring solid indicator about the situation like:
- was that the sole fact of hitchhiking unusual for that person or just a normal way of getting places?
- was he/she reluctant to get into a truck: no? or maybe yes, and if so, that would be a good indicator that there was strong sense of urgency OR a plan to get somewhere farther (as truckers generally are doing long distances while people in regular cars often have just few miles to make).
I wonder if that was considered in Corinne's case.
And also... obviously its just my impression, but I am, still, under impression that she knew where she was going and that there was someone:
a) expecting her to show up,
b) to the very least: suprised that she didnt show up,
c) who got a scary thought like oh God, Corinne is missing, I think that she may try to get to see me then.
So my first naive thought with a scenario with serial killer or not serial killer but a random murderer was like: noo... they would knew cause as soon as this person would tell that:
(a) she/he was expecting Corinne,
(b) he/she thought that Corinne will show up around that time,
(c) worried that something horrible happened cause Corinne would likely go to meet him/her
investigators would know that likelyness of something sinister happening to Corinne are very high and that shes okay but somewhere away.
That lasted for like... ten seconds?
Cause then I thought...
If I was expecting Corinne to show up and had no idea why she didnt, then learned that shes missing. Would I came forward to say that oh, we were... planning to go (for example) on a music festival in X city... or that we wanted to take a break from everything and spend a week in my grandmas place since she left me the keyes and went on vacation?
Its horrible to say, but I think I wouldnt. I would probably think that there is not enough to gain there.
By "gain" I mean - as everyone already knew Corinne is missing... cops were notified... nobody knew where she went... and (in this scenario) my info wouldnt provide any solid info and could be easily brushed off as "oh, she may just change her mind and planned to go somewhere else so we cant really go hard with assumption that this info significantly raises the probability that she was abducted or attacked by the driver". While in the same time I would put myself on the spot like HEY I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MEET CORINNE AND NOW SHES MISSING and not only get some trouble for myself by getting investigators attention but also take away some of the attention they had for Corinne's case to focus on me, not elsewhere.
Which waters down to: no - nobody coming forward with the info that they were supposed to meet Corinne that day doesnt mean anything. Such person may exist and not come forward cause they were the ones who harmed Corinne... or they may have nothing to do with her disappearance and never say anything anyway.
So... at the end my post provides nothing.
